SAN ANTONIO (August 30, 2021) — City Councilwomen Ana Sandoval and Teri Castillo held a Housing, Utility, and Legal Assistance Clinic this past Saturday at St. Mary’s University. The clinic acted as a one-stop shop for residents to get help with rent, utility bills, and tenant-landlord disputes. Between 600 and 700 residents attended with over 425 households receiving either rent, utility, or legal assistance.

"The stories residents told me at the clinic make it clear: our community is under tremendous pressure," said Councilwoman Ana Sandoval. "We need to do everything we can to help residents stay in their homes. What we saw Saturday is only the tip of the iceberg."

“The community turn out for rental and utility assistance was a dose of the urgent need to connect our families with resources necessary to remain healthy and housed in the midst of an ongoing pandemic,” said Councilwoman Teri Castillo. “While eviction mitigation efforts continue to take place, we must act as a city to implement policy that protects our families from eviction as other Texas cities have. Our District 5 team is grateful for the partnership of the District 7 Office, the Neighborhood and Housing Services Department, the Texas RioGrande Legal Aid and additional partners who continue to work collaboratively for the health and safety of the greater San Antonio community.”

The clinic was made possible by the participation of the City of San Antonio's Neighborhood & Housing Services Department, Department of Human Services, and Metropolitan Health District; CPS Energy; San Antonio Water System (SAWS); St. Mary's University School of Law; Texas RioGrande Legal Aide; Bexar County Economic and Community Development; and the San Antonio Food Bank.
