City Of San Antonio: Parks And Recreation Hosts Tree Planting Ceremony At Cuellar Park To Commemorate 20th Anniversary Of September 11

SAN ANTONIO (September 10, 2021) – San Antonio Parks and Recreation, in partnership with District 6 Councilwoman Melissa Cabello Havrda, is hosting a tree planting ceremony on Saturday, September 11 from 10 a.m. -11 a.m. at Patrolman Richard Cuellar Park (502 S.W. 36th Street). A small ceremony and tree planting will commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11.
“We’ll plant a tree at Cuellar Park as a symbol of hope,” said Councilwoman Cabello Havrda. “Twenty years after the events that changed our lives we stand resilient and determined to not forget and to never lose faith in our ability to endure and rebuild.” In addition, throughout the month of September, trees will be planted at City parks named in honor of veterans.
“There were countless people who showed their compassion in the days, weeks, and years after the September 11 attacks. We’re planting a Texas native tree to remember the lives we lost, and for the first responders, public servants, and neighbors, who continue to serve those in need,” said Homer Garcia III, Director of Parks and Recreation.
After the tree planting ceremony at Patrolman Richard Cuellar Park, the staff at Cuellar Community Center will provide a hands-on activity based on The Survivor Tree story – a tree that was found at Ground Zero after the attacks and rehabilitated by the New York Parks and Recreation Department. The tree was returned to the site at the 9/11 Memorial Museum where it now stands as a living reminder of resilience, survival, and hope. The community is invited to join us on-site for activities or take a grab-n-go activity kit to enjoy at home.
From 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., The Basketball Embassy will be activating the Cuellar Park basketball court for Hoopin’ with Heroes, bringing local police, firefighters and first responders together with the communities they serve. Families and children of all ages are welcome to enjoy a day of free food and drinks, basketball games and competitions with local heroes, and special appearances from community leaders. The Basketball Embassy is a non-profit organization that aims to empower youth and bridge divides through basketball.
