San Antonio (January 21, 2022) – The Public Works Department is preparing to drain portions of the San Antonio River as part of a maintenance project that begins Sunday, January 23, 2022, through Sunday, January 30, 2022, weather permitting.

The main channel (from East Josephine Street to East Nueva Street) will be partially drained, and crews will completely drain the river loop and extension areas (see map for details). The draining project is vital to ensuring the waterway remains a beautiful attraction for residents and visitors.

Crews will be setting up a crane to help with debris removal and Alamo Street (between Market Street and Commerce Street) will be closed to all traffic. The sidewalk, near the crane, will not be accessible to pedestrians for safety reasons. Go Rio Cruises will not be in operation, in the River Walk and Museum Reach areas, until the maintenance project is complete.

The San Antonio River Maintenance program is a joint effort between the San Antonio Public Works Department, San Antonio Center City Development Operations, and the San Antonio River Authority.
