Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:

  1. H-E-B recently donated $1 million to nonprofit organizations "working to aid children and families affected by Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine." Those nonprofits are Save the Children, UNICEF and Global Food Banking Network's Emergency Response Fund. The company also gave "$50,000 to Ukrainian San Antonio, a nonprofit working to gather supplies and funds for Razom for Ukraine, an organization providing humanitarian aid in war torn parts of the country." In addition, the grocery chain launched "Save the Children, an effort that allows shoppers to support Ukrainian children and their families by making monetary donations at the register for $1, $3 and $5." A personal donation of "$500,000 to the International Committee of the Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders and USA for United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees" was also made by Charles Butt, Chairman of H-E-B. 2. For the second time since 2020, San Antonio was ranked "the most-impoverished large metro area in the United States," according to the most recent U.S Census Bureau data. Per their figures, 14.2 percent lived in poverty from 2016-2020, which means that about 350,000 people "lived under the poverty threshold of $26,500 for a family of four last year." Although the "poverty rate shrank by about 1.9 percent during that same time," per the Census Bureau, "that decline is well behind that of other big metro areas, which averaged a drop of 3.5 percent over the past four years." 3. It has been 3 months now since 4-year-old Lina Sardar Khil disappeared, and although "the case is still active," the family said that "communication has gone quiet." On Sunday, March 20, they gathered with others to remind the city that Lina is "still out there." Pamela Allen, CEO of Eagles Flight and Advocacy and Outreach, has "led search efforts that spanned 27 miles of green belts in San Antonio, trying to find any clue in Lina's disappearance." She said that although SAPD and the FBI have "been quite supportive of the family, communication is just not there from FBI and SAPD," at this time, so she believes that "signs with photos of Lina are critical in reminding people what she looks like." A $50,000 reward is being offered by San Antonio Crime Stoppers for information regarding Lina's disappearance, and The Islamic Center of San Antonio posted a $200,000 reward.
