Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:

  1. Bennie Price, CEO and founder of Big Mama's Safe House, was recently invited to the White House as guest speaker during "the signing of the Safer Communities Act." As "the only Texas non-profit representative," he spoke about "how his organization is fighting gun violence in the Alamo City." Surprisingly, this past week his non-profit received "a $100,000 grant from gun safety group Everytown." Price said, "The money that we got awarded, it will allow us to stay in existence, as far as being able to take care of the day-to-day operations and then our pilot program called the GREAT Program." He added, "I want to say thank you to Everytown for believing in us and giving us the opportunity to have funding to show that we can do the work and the money is going in a great place and that's towards ending and violence." (FOX 29)
  2. The site where "53 migrants died in the back of a sweltering tractor trailer abandoned in Southwest San Antonio" early this summer is now being overtaken by a "Picasso-inspired mural of a red tractor trailer carrying dozens of migrants." The memorial is "the work of artist Roberto Marquez," a Mexican migrant himself who now lives in Dallas. His work "is splashed across four large panels" and "stands at the center of this place of mourning and contemplation," which now "has become sacred ground for people trying to make sense of the tragedy." For more on the artist and his mural, please visit: (San Antonio Current)
  3. If you're searching for a four-legged friend, there are many pets waiting to be adopted at various "animal shelters in and around San Antonio." For example, "Pinky the cat is waiting patiently" at the Footbridge Foundation, located at 3310 Oakwell Ct. There's also "Tinky, a Siamese up for adoption." Now, if you're not "sure if you have time to take care of a pet year-round, many shelters also offer opportunities to foster pets until they are placed in permanent homes." Whatever you decide, "Patch and Petfinder can help you" find your new buddy. "Click on any listing for more information about a pet or to start the adoption process" by visiting: (San Antonio Patch)
  4. This past week, "a new pizza restaurant" called Fiume "opened in the Hilton Palacio Del Rio on the River Walk," at 200 S. Alamo Street. The venue's name Fiume stands for "river in English" and their menu features "Neapolitan pizzas with Texas ingredients, including the Sweet Texas Hot, a pizza topped with local hot honey, applewood smoked bacon, hot Calabrian pepper and white sauce." Also, Daniel Mezza's Puro Nitro Coffee "was named a top 10 finalist this week in H-E-B's Quest for Texas Best contest," and he "was the lone San Antonio finalist" among more than 500 Texas contestants. A competition for all the finalists will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 25 at "Fair Park in Dallas." For these and more local food stories visit: (San Antonio Magazine)
  5. There's a unique house for sale in San Antonio, and what makes it unique isn't that there's "a huge walk-in closet in every bedroom," but it's actually the fact that the "one-story, 4-bedrooms, 3 bath" home comes with a cavern! "That's right, this house has its own underground natural cavern," and you can see it for yourself by visiting: (WOAI)
