Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:

  1. The San Antonio Housing Authority (SAHA) is now called Opportunity Home San Antonio, to reflect "the changing affordable housing need in its community." The decision to change the name was based on input from "residents, staff and community-based organization partners who communicated an affinity and distinct difference between housing and a house and the term home, which communicates comfort, safety and family." According to Dr. Ana Margarita "Cha" Guzman, chair of the Board of Commissioners of Opportunity Home, "the word 'authority' no longer reflects the vision of a 21st century San Antonio." (KSAT San Antonio)
  2. San Antonio homeowners who qualify can soon apply for a city Home Rehab program to help "with major and minor repairs to their homes." Funds can be used for repairs such as "foundation/structural concerns, roofing, electrical, plumbing, heating, and/or cooling repairs, water heater, and window or door improvements." From Aug. 8-Sept. 19, eligible homeowners will be able to apply through the online 2023 Home Rehab Application. Those that need help with the application process can attend one of "14 outreach events" that will be held in the city to "assist residents with applications and submissions." (KSAT San Antonio)
  3. Due to "a variety of reasons," several celebrities have canceled their appearances at the San Antonio's Celebrity Fan Fest scheduled "from Thursday, Aug. 4 to Sunday, Aug. 7 at the Freeman Expo Hall," located at 3201 E Houston St. According to event officials, "The most frustrating part of being a showrunner is dealing with guest cancellations." For details on the celebrity cancellations, please visit: (mySA)
  4. After "almost 90 years," the original Burbank High School building on San Antonio's Southside is closing down. Starting this new school year, students will attend "the new SAISD campus located next to the original." On Saturday, July 23, SAISD officials offered the public an opportunity to take "a final look at the storied school." Those in attendance "reminisced on their school day memories, took photos around their homeroom classes and flipped through yearbooks dating back to the 1930s." To read some of their stories, please visit: (mySA)
  5. "Thanks to persistent drought and the lack of rainfall" this summer, "San Antonio is breaking all kinds of records" in regard to the weather. "According to the National Weather Service, 2022 may be the first year that San Antonio has experienced three consecutive months of record-breaking heat." For example, last month "was so hot that San Antonio officially broke a record for the number of 100-degree days in any one month, with 28 total days of triple-digit heat."
