On Wednesday, the Chamber’s Aerospace Committee hosted Jesus Saenz, Jr., Director of Airports for the City of San Antonio. He highlighted the ongoing planning his department has engaged in while preparing a final proposal for the San Antonio Airport’s modernization and expansion.

Looking ahead to the Strategic Development Plan for 2040, Saenz shared his longer-term vision of expanding the on-airport runway to 10,000 ft.; the terminal, roadway and garage plan; and the airport access plan to match the expansive growth of the San Antonio region.

Additionally, Saenz spoke of his plan to implement design principles that would bring the unique structure and culture of San Antonio to the airport, the ultimate gateway to our city. The inputs from our committee members and the overall discussion were enlightening.

In other committee business, Committee Chair Dick Francey introduced Christina Martinez, the new Executive Director of the Dee Howard Foundation, to the committee.

The Aerospace Committee formed two working groups in June which will be meeting again in late August. The working groups are charged with creating an aerospace education resource guide for PreK-12 educators and with collecting and communicating industry feedback for educators and workforce program administrators. Looking into September, the committee will be discussing the private sector space industry in the region and what it holds for the future.
