SAN ANTONIO (September 24, 2021) – During Tuesday's Public Safety Committee meeting Chair Councilwoman Cabello Havrda and the members of the committee voted to move the acceptance of an $815,785 Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention (MVCPA) grant to full Council consideration at the October 14 regular Council meeting.

The MCVPA grant will fund seven detectives and two civilian positions in the SAPD Auto Theft division. There are currently 20 sworn and three civilian positions in the division, overall. The division’s goal is to institute innovative enforcement and theft prevention techniques, lower the number of stolen vehicles, and increase stolen vehicle recovery rates.

The Committee also approved a motion to present the full council with an amendment to the 2013 Parks Safety Zone Ordinance, which prohibits registered sex offenders from living within 1,000 ft. of a City park or wandering within 300 feet of a park. The amendment would add schools to the ordinance. The item will also be taken up by the full Council on October 14.

“We all want to live in a safer community,” said Public Safety Committee Chair Melissa Cabello Havrda. “This Committee’s intent is to ensure that the process that leads to community safety is swift and unencumbered. Both the Auto Theft Grant and the sex offender ordinance amendment will be considered by the full Council in three weeks.”
