• South Padre Island bar demolished for 3-story Bubba Gump Shrimp (lmtonline.com) — Construction is underway on a three-story Bubba Gump Shrimp restaurant on South Padre Island’s bayside, replacing the demolished Coconut Jack’s Bar and Grill at 2301 Laguna Blvd. Locals and longtime visitors are split between excitement for the national chain and concern about supporting independent seafood spots, especially beloved institutions on the Island and across the causeway in Port Isabel.
   

• SPI reviews special events funding (portisabelsouthpadre.com) — South Padre Island’s Special Events Committee is rethinking how it funds festivals and tournaments after data showed current sponsorships don’t recoup their costs through hotel taxes. Members are pushing for stricter application timelines, standardized scorecards, caps on awards, and an appeals process, while introducing a new tourism chief who will help grow and better track visitor-driven events on the Island.
   

• 2026 statements mailed to property owners (sbnewspaper.com) — Property tax bills for 2026 are now out across Cameron County, and South Padre Island property owners can pay locally at the Lone Star National Bank branch on Padre Boulevard or online. Discounts are available for early payments in October, November, and December, and several payment plans, including quarterly options for seniors and disabled residents, can help spread out the cost before penalties begin in February.
