Arrest Made In South Austin Homicide
Jessica Romero, 37, under arrest in connection to death of Benito Luna Vargas, 34; two more suspect being sought by police.
SOUTH AUSTIN, TEXAS — Police have arrested one of the suspects in a South Austin homicide that occurred over the weekend, officials said on Monday.
In a press advisory released Monday, police said Jessica Romero, 37, was arrested in connection to the death of Benito Luna Vargas, 34, following an assault on Sunday. In a previous press release, police said s call about a disturbance at 1215 Southport Dr. was received just before 12:30 a.m. on Sunday. Upon arrival, police found two men severely beaten, including Vargas who died shortly after being hospitalized.
A reward to $1,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the remaining two suspects, described only as a heavyset Hispanic man in his late 40s and a Hispanic woman in her late 20s, also said to be heavyset. Police noted a booking photo for Romero is being withheld pending detectives' conducting of a photo lineup.

As police continue to investigate, they urge anyone with information or video of this incident to call Crime Stoppers at 512-472-TIPS or text "Tip 103" + their message to CRIMES or use the new Crime Stoppers App or email APD Homicide at homicide.apd@austintexas.gov. Those with information may remain anonymous, police added. People with knowledge of the incident also can submit tips by downloading APD’s mobile app, Austin PD, for free on iPhone and Android.

Police earlier said the deadly incident began in the street before spilling into a residence where two men were badly beaten. The other victim received medical treatment at a hospital before being released.
