Austin Police Capture Suspect Who Tried Robbing Two Banks On Same Day

Shawn Hunter, 34, tried, and failed, to rob two banks on same day but fled the scene both times without securing any cash.

AUSTIN, TX — Police arrested a suspect wanted in two attempted bank robberies committed on the same day, law enforcement officials said Friday.

The two bank robberies occurred this past Tuesday, Jan. 24. But the suspect may qualify as the world's worst bank robber, fleeing the scene both times before securing any cash and unable to lay low for a while only to be picked up by police in an unrelated disturbance the following day.

The first attempted robbery occurred Tuesday afternoon at the University Federal Credit Union located at 13860 North U.S. Highway 183 where the suspect passed a note through the drive-through. But before bank workers could respond, he drove off. No money was taken, and no one was injured.

The second bank robbery occurred at the Chase Bank branch at 12858 North U.S. Highway 183 the same afternoon. The suspect is said to have asked about taking out a loan as a ruse before presenting a written demand for cash. A bank worker went into a secure area of the bank and called police, prompting the suspect to flee without any cash.

The next day, an officer responding to a disturbance call at 12300 Hymeadow Drive recognized the suspect and also noticed the vehicle resembled the one described by witnesses. Hunter was detained, interviewed by robbery detectives and reportedly confessed to participating in both robberies.

Police identified the suspect as Shawn Hunter, 34, who is now behind bars at the Williamson County Jail.

Despite the lack of cash taken, police still categorized the incidents as the first and second bank robberies of the year. Two days after Hunter's failed capers, a woman presented a note to a teller at a local Chase Bank branch and fled with some cash in the third bank robbery of the year.
