Police ID Driver Killed In South Austin Wreck

Jarrod Wayne Sowers, 33, died after driving his Hyundai across opposite lane of traffic, injuring two other drivers in the process.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TEXAS — Police on Wednesday identified the driver killed the previous day in a two-vehicle collision.

The preliminary police investigation found that a 2012 Hyundai was traveling southbound along the 500 block of South Pleasant Valley Road on Aug. 21 at around 6:35 a.m. when it crossed the center yellow line onto northbound lanes for unknown reasons. Simultaneously, a 2009 Toyota and 2016 Toyota were traveling northbound in the 500 block of South Pleasant Valley Road when the Hyundai crashed head-on into the former vehicle.

The driver of the 2016 Toyota was unable to stop in time to avoid the collision, crashing into the other Toyota, according to police. The female drivers of both Toyota vehicles both were injured before being rushed to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Hyundai, identified as Jarrod Wayne Sowers, 33, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the collision marked Austin’s 43rd fatal traffic crash of 2018, resulting in 44 fatalities this year. At this time in 2017, there were 40 fatal traffic crashes and forty-two traffic fatalities, police added.
