Active TB Case Found At Fort Bend ISD's Bush High School

Health Department to test 600 students, 27 staff members to cases of tuberculosis

RICHMOND, TX — Officials with Fort Bend County Health and Human services will be testing 600 students and 27 teachers at George Bush High School after officials discovered an active case of tuberculosis.

Families of the students were contacted by mail that testing will be conducted on Monday, June 19 at the high school. (Want to get daily updates about traffic news and other events going on in your area? Sign up for the free Houston Patch morning newsletter.)

Officials learned of the active TB case on May 30, but have not indicated if the infected person was a student, teacher or another school district employee, KTRK reported.

Earlier this year, two other schools in the Houston area reported cases of tuberculosis at their campus.

On Feb. 3, administrators at El Campo ISD sent home letters to parents of potential exposure to TB at El Campo High School, and offered voluntary testing.

A second incident ot TB was reported several days later at Clements High School in Fort Bend ISD.

Some of symptoms of TB include:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Lethargy
  • Night Sweats
  • Coughing
  • Chest Pain
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Unexplained weight loss

Testing for TB is conducted through either a blood test or skin test, and is a painless procedure.
