According to statement from Katy ISD, Mullins was trying to remove the pig, which was an FFA livestock project, from the barn and take it to a processing facility.
Witnesses said Mullins had tied a rope around the pig's neck and struggled to drag the pig out of the barn, which was squealing and fighting him, the Houston Chronicle reported.

That’s when witnesses said Mullins took out a .22 caliber rifle and shot the pig once in the head.
An instructor who heard the shot called Katy ISD Police, who came to the barn and started an investigation.
“At no time did the student make any threat toward other individuals present, nor were other livestock projects harmed,” Katy ISD officials said in their statement.
The district urged parents to use the incident as a teachable moment to reinforce school safety.
