Missouri City Residents Clean Up From Tornado Aftermath

City leaders advise caution as cleanup crews continue removing debris and assessing the damage caused by the storms.

MISSOURI CITY, TX -- Residents in Missouri City are cleaning up a day after severe storms and tornadoes ripped through communities in Fort Bend County.

Six tornadoes touched down Tuesday morning with a majority of those reported in communities in Fort Bend County.

The tornadoes and high winds associated with the thunderstorms caused minor damage to 40 homes in the Brightwater subdivision, in the form of minor roof damage, downed fences, and escaped pets.

The severe weather also caused damage to traffic signals at Lexington Blvd and Murphy Road, and Lexington Boulevard and Brightwater Drive.

A downed tree at 4100 Lexington briefly caused one traffic lane to be closed as well, city officials said.

WCA Waste Corp and the city’s public works department worked through Tuesday afternoon to asses debris removal in residential areas and on city streets.

That process will continue as needed this week.

Public works is also helping residents whose homes were damaged with filling out paperwork to make home repairs, especially if they require permits, such as a complete roof replacement, or replacement of a fireplace that was toppled over.

Meanwhile, emergency management officials are asking everyone traveling through affected areas in the county to remain cautious of the significant impacts to structures along the Murphy Road-Greenbriar Drive corridor.

The officials also advise motorists to drive with caution and avoid walking along streets with damage until proper cleanup is complete.

Residents who have missing pets may contact the city’s Animal Control division at 281-403-8707 or visit the Animal Shelter facility behind the City Hall complex, 1919 Scanlin Rd.
