Dallas Street getting $8.9M makeover, including new sidewalks, repaving, utilities (star-telegram.com) — Dallas Street in East Waco is set for an $8.9 million overhaul that will repave the road, add sidewalks, ramps, lighting, and new storm drains from Elm Avenue across Waco Drive. Work, funded partly by a federal grant, will also upgrade water and sewer lines and improve nearby Chestnut Avenue, with construction expected to start later this year and wrap up around next November.

2. One person killed, another injured in Waco shooting (kxxv.com subscription) — Waco police are investigating a Sunday evening shooting that left a 28-year-old man dead and a 19-year-old man injured near the 3600 block of N. 20th Street/Alice Avenue. Investigators believe the incident was isolated among people who knew each other and are asking residents to share any tips, including anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

Waco roadwork roundup: Twin Bridges traffic shift begins, big changes proposed for I-35 and Business 77 (kwtx.com) — Expect long-term traffic shifts on Waco's Highway 6 Twin Bridges and continued lane closures on I-35, especially near Baylor and McLane Stadium this fall. TxDOT is also planning to convert part of Business 77 into a more walkable urban boulevard, with a public hearing set for September 10.

Down goes No. 6 Baylor: TXST Soccer wins first ever Top 10 matchup (universitystar.com) — Texas State women's soccer stunned No. 6 Baylor 3–1 at Betty Lou Mays Field in Waco, handing the Bears their first loss of the season. A big local crowd saw two second-half goals from Helen Alormenu seal the upset, capping a strong early stretch for the visiting Bobcats.

Record heat takes aim at Southern Plains with Texas, Oklahoma in the bull's-eye (foxweather.com) — Waco is among several major Texas cities that haven't seen a drop of rain this month, giving the city its driest start to August on record as triple-digit heat continues. With Texas drought conditions rapidly worsening and little rain in the seven-day outlook, residents should be prepared for ongoing extreme heat and increasing strain on local water resources.
