A 4th Wave Of COVID-19? Every State Sees Increase In Cases

ACROSS AMERICA — The coronavirus is making a comeback across the United States, spawning a potential fourth wave of infections and prompting the director of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention to dub the increases a "pandemic of the unvaccinated."

As the more-contagious delta variant continues to spread, the United States recorded an average of 26,448 new cases per day over the last week, up 67 percent from the week prior, according to a CNN analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University.

In fact, cases are rising in all 50 states, according to a New York Times database. Just under 40 states have seen at least a 50 percent increase. Some of the biggest jumps are being seen in states with lower vaccination rates, according to the Times.

Tennessee has seen a 373 percent increase over the last 14 days, while Florida also recorded a 232 percent.

Hospital admissions have also climbed about 36 percent and deaths rose by 26 percent, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday.

CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said nearly all hospital admissions and deaths are among those who hadn’t been immunized, The Associated Press reported. As of Friday, only 48.4 percent of the U.S. population was fully vaccinated, according to CDC data.

Still, not even states with higher vaccination rates are immune to the spike in cases.

In Vermont, where 67 percent of the population is fully vaccinated, cases have jumped 211 percent. Massachusetts, where 63 percent are vaccinated, has seen a 208 percent increase, according to the Times database.

One of the most overwhelmed areas of the country is Springfield, Missouri, where public health officials begged the state this week to convert a dormitory, hotel or another large space for the care of less seriously ill COVID-19 patients so that the city's two hospitals can focus on the sickest, the AP reported.

In California, Los Angeles County will once again require masks indoors, even if residents have been fully who have been vaccinated.
