Health Insurance Could Spike $50 Per Paycheck For Unvaccinated

Experts say some large companies are weighing the surcharge as an alternative to offering employees incentives to get vaccinated.

Americans who have yet to be vaccinated against COVID-19 could soon be paying higher health insurance premiums, an effort by companies to protect employees from the dangers of the virus.

While many businesses are hesitant to put vaccine mandates in place, experts told CBS News that some large companies are considering whether to increase monthly health insurance premiums for employees who are unvaccinated.

Wade Symons, a partner at benefits consulting firm Mercer Health, told CBS News the idea is gaining momentum in industries including manufacturing, retail, hospitality, financial services, and other sectors.

"They're looking for something that's going to move the needle, and they're looking at a surcharge as a potential option for that," Symons told CBS News.
