As week one of the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics comes to a end, Team USA has slowly moved its way up to third place in the overall medal count. As of Friday morning, U.S. athletes have won 14 medals, including four gold medals, in various sports from figure skating and curling to alpine skiing and speed skating.

Team USA is close behind Norway and Italy's 18 medals, with Norway having scooped up eight gold medals in the opening week.

Team USA's men's and woman's figure skating teams have commanded the news this week as Ilia Malinin and his team took home the gold medal in the team event, and the ice dance pair Madison Chock and Evan Bates won silver for their division. The figure skaters were not the only athletes having a stellar week at the Olympics, as the alpine ski team also won several medals. Breezy Johnson won her first gold medal for the women's downhill event and the women's team combined placed third.

Even though the alpine ski team had a good week, two notable stars of the team stumbled. Three-time Olympic medalist Lindsey Vonn was sidelined after she crashed during the women's downhill event. Mikaela Shiffrin struggled to medal after coming in fourth in the team combined event.

The first week of the Olympics also saw plenty of firsts for team USA. Speed skater Jordan Stolz broke an Olympic record for Tuesday's men's 1000-meter race. The men's hockey team also achieved a historic shutout of 5-0 against Canada on Wednesday.
