ACROSS AMERICA — Americans from all walks of life paused Saturday morning to remember the 20th anniversary of the deadliest terrorist attack on U.S. soil.

On Sept. 11, 2001, planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 people were killed.

Memorial services were held in all three places beneath the shadow of a pandemic and just days after the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, which is now ruled by the same militants who gave safe haven to terrorists behind 9/11.

“It’s hard because you hoped that this would just be a different time and a different world. But sometimes history starts to repeat itself and not in the best of ways,” Thea Trinidad, who lost her father in the attacks, told The Associated Press before the ceremony in New York.

The following are several photos capturing moments from the memorial services in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania.
