WASHINGTON, DC — U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh has tested positive for COVID-19, according to a statement released by the court.

Kavanaugh, who joined the Supreme Court in 2018, was tested Thursday just hours ahead of Justice Amy Coney Barrett's formal investiture ceremony Friday. Kavanaugh has been fully vaccinated since January, and currently is not experiencing symptoms, the statement said.

As a precaution, Kavanaugh and his wife did not attend Barrett's investiture ceremony.

Kavanaugh's wife and daughters are also fully vaccinated and tested negative for COVID-19 on Thursday, the statement said.

Kavanaugh's diagnosis comes after the court announced earlier this month it would resume holding in-person oral arguments when it returned for its fall term in October, according to a report by Politico.
