Vine Looping Video App May Be Coming Back

Vine, Dom Hofmann's video sharing app Twitter killed a year ago, may be coming back.

Vine, the video sharing app Twitter killed last year, may be on its way back. Dom Hofmann, who created the once wildly successful social media platform, posted a cryptic tweet Wednesday with “V2” on a green background — Vine’s signature color.

Hofmann has been tweeting about Vine for a few days now, but said on Twitter he’s not ready to ready to talk about it. He is funding the project independently.

Vine was launched in 2013 and was wildly popular among users who liked the idea of posting short, six-second looping videos. But by 2016, more than half of the top 1 percent of users had abandoned it, and Twitter wasn’t able to monetize it.

One of the reasons, according to Markerly, is that competing platforms like Snapchat, Instagram and YouTube that allowed for longer videos, as well as photos, custom filters and brand channels.

Wednesday’s tweet wasn’t complete surprise. Hofmann tweeted on Nov. 30 that he was “going to work on a follow-up” to the Vine app.
