WASHINGTON, DC — President Donald Trump intends to choose Amy Coney Barrett, a federal appellate judge viewed as a reliable conservative on hot-button legal issues, to succeed Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the U.S. Supreme Court, according to The New York Times and other media reports

The president is scheduled to formally announce his pick Saturday. According to the The Times, White House aides cautioned that Trump could still change his mind and select a different candidate.

If Trump selects Barrett, her nomination will come a little more than a week after the death of Ginsburg, who used her position on the Supreme Court to fight gender discrimination and unify the court's liberal wing. Ginsburg died Sept. 18 of complications of metastatic pancreas cancer.

A devout Catholic, Barrett is compared by religious conservatives and others on the right to conservative icon Antonin Scalia, the late Supreme Court justice for whom she clerked.
