On Saturday May 6, 2026 from 12 P.M. to 10 P.M join Dance Place and Coyaba Dance Theatre for the 38th annual DanceAfrica DC 2026 festival. Experience a day full of engaging activities, offering something for everyone. Enjoy vendors, a free outdoor festival, ticketed indoor performance, and finishing the day off with “The Fête”. 
Prepare to experience the heart and soul of Africa right here in DC.&nbsp; This year’s theme is ‘Past, Present, Future’. As a community, we will reflect on the past, find joy in the present, and celebrate our hope for the future! The enriching master classes, invigorating, indoor and outdoor performances, and vibrant African marketplace are sure to energize you!&nbsp;&nbsp;
The festival will also take place June 1 – June 7, 2026. Curated and guided by the iconic Griot Mama Sylvia Soumah, DanceAfrica DC 2026 will be a hub for togetherness, celebration, cultural exchange, and boundless joy.

Flight! 1.0 is an evening-length dance work that investigates marronage as a method of placemaking and explores the life and legacy of Queen Nanny: a great warrior and healer who led the Windward Jamaican maroons in fighting off the British army. Original live music and text combine with inventive movement melding West African, ballet, Afro-Caribbean, and modern dance reflective of mixed-race maroon communities. The work invites witnesses into active meditation on collective world-building.&nbsp;
Flight! 1.0 is also funded by the Carla Perlo Fund for Choreography &amp; Performance, established by the Howard and Geraldine Polinger Family Foundation in 2017 to honor the career of Dance Place Founding Director Emerita Carla Perlo.
The Carla Perlo Fund for Choregraphy &amp; Performance is intended to support the creation of new dance works and residencies at Dance Place. The Howard and Geraldine Polinger Family Foundation’s support ensures Dance Place’s continued ability to nurture outstanding artists and advance the field of dance.

Join us for a night of celebration, connection, and creativity at the Energizers Sneaker Ball — an unforgettable tribute to the youth, mentors, and community that have shaped the legacy of Dance Place’s Energizers Creative Arts Programs.
What began in 1986 as Carla’s Kids, founded by visionary arts educator Carla Perlo, evolved into the Energizers in 1994. Over nearly four decades, this vibrant program has supported youth through dance and the arts — growing to include Teen Leaders, After School students, summer campers, internships, and more. From classrooms to the stage and beyond, Energizers have transformed from passionate kids into thriving adults, educators, and artists.
This red carpet affair celebrates the generations of young people who found their voice, power, and community through the arts. Expect a powerful evening of dance, storytelling, live performances, delicious food, fresh kicks, and a tribute to the legacy we continue to build together.
Come dressed to impress — in your finest semi-formal attire and your flyest sneakers — and help us honor the past, uplift the present, and energize the future.

Festival Celebrating America’s 250th Anniversary National Archives Building Constitution Avenue | Washington, DC June 4-6, 2026 You're invited to the <a href="https://archivesfoundation.org/spirit-of-independence-festival/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Spirit of Independence Festival</a>, a three-day immersive celebration of American history, culture, and community at the National Archives—the home of the original Declaration of Independence—in the heart of Washington, DC.&nbsp; Hosted beneath a tent spanning two city blocks in front of the National Archives, the Spirit of Independence Festival will include free daytime events for families and three evening benefit events to support the National Archives Foundation and its effort to engage the American public with the nation’s history.&nbsp; From free daytime programming like a patriotic pet “yappy hour” to ticketed nighttime events like a culinary “taste of America,” there’s something for everyone to enjoy throughout the multi-day festival.
