Her more famous husband Robert never composed a piano trio...until he heard wife Clara's astonishing work. Beethoven influenced himself, arranging his own widely lauded Septet for trio. As an award-winning composer including a 2020 Grammy nomination, Phil bassist Gregg August's work revels in the influence of Latin jazz. Downtown Music Presents: Chamber Music with the Phil – Influencers

Chinese-German violinist Leonard Fu has appeared with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, NDR Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. His chamber partners have included Mitsuko Uchida, Laurence Lesser, Kim Kashkashian, and Manuel Fischer-Dieskau. A laureate of the Joachim, Postacchini, and Schadt international string competitions, he will become a member of the Juilliard String Quartet (second violin) and join the faculty of the Juilliard school in the fall of 2026.&nbsp;


A native of Boone, North Carolina, Baron Fenwick was awarded the Silver Medal in the Sendai International Piano Competition in Japan and has appeared with orchestras throughout the United States and around the world. His extensive repertoire includes more than 60 world premieres, including four world premiere piano concertos. He holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Juilliard School. He will begin a position as pianist and administrator for American Ballet Theater in the fall of 2026.

Sarah Crocker Vonsattel has been a member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra since 2008. Ms. Vonsattel has appeared as concerto soloist with the Classical Tahoe Orchestra, the Syracuse Orchestra, and the mmusicians of the Detroit Symphony.&nbsp; Recent chamber music performances include appearances at Weill Recital Hall, Manchester Music Festival, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and Bargemusic. Anna Stoytcheva, winner of the Ettore Pozzoli International Piano Competition and a fellow with the New World Symphony, is frequently heard at major festivals including Marlboro, Music Academy of the West, Banff, Pianofest, Bowdoin and Kneisel Hall.

An "alert and highly musical baritone" (Opera News), Nathaniel Sullivan infuses his work with&nbsp;"impressive strength and precision" (Schmopera), as well as “great eloquence” and "allegiance to both music and words" (ConcertoNet).&nbsp; He has appeared with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Opera Theatre of St. Louis, and the Alabama Symphony. He has been heard at Tanglewood, Carnegie Hall, and with Apollo’s Fire.&nbsp; A winner of the 2023 Astral Artists National Competition, Nathaniel is the recipient of the Grace B. Jackson Prize for exceptional service at the Tanglewood Music Center.

Pianist Nathaniel LaNasa has been praised for his “stormy lyricism” (The New York Times), his “dark, liquid piano tone” (Classical Music Daily), and his “poise and elegance” (Feast of Music).&nbsp;As winners of the 2019 Joy In Singing International Art Song Competition, Nate and partner, baritone Gregory Feldmann, made their sold-out Carnegie Hall debut in February 2020.&nbsp; He has appeared in song partnerships at the Musée d’Orsay, Royaumont Abbey, the Brooklyn Art Song Society, and the New York Festival of Song.&nbsp;In 2022, Nate took charge of the Festival of Song’s new music series, NYFOS Next, where his presentations of works by living composers at the Rubin Museum have received critical acclaim. A graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory and the Yale School of Music, pianist Jiusi Zhang,
made his orchestral debut in 2022 with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Peter Bay; performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 at Van Cliburn Concert Hall as&nbsp; winner of the PianoTexas Concerto Competition.&nbsp; He is First Prize winner at the 2025 Lancaster International Piano Festival Competition, and&nbsp; received the Silver Medal at the 2025 Rubato International Piano Competition. He is the 2026 recipient of the Elizabeth Parisot Prize, awarded annually to an outstanding pianist from the Yale School of Music.&nbsp;

The Downtown Chorale, conducted by Timothy Lewis, presents music of Harry Burleigh.Timothy Lewis has served as Director of Downtown Music since 1988, and Director of Music at the Episcopal Church of the Messiah, Rhinebeck, NY since 2015.&nbsp; As an organist, New York area recitals include programs at The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, the early music series at St. Peter’s Church, and at the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church where he performed the New York premiere of Ruth Schonthal’s The Temptation of St. Anthony.&nbsp; Mr. Lewis served as conductor for the East Coast premiere of The Three Hermits, an opera by the American composer, Stephen Paulus. Rachel Blumenthal is Associate Principal Flute of the New York City Ballet and Second Flute/Piccolo of Santa Fe Opera. She has been a frequent guest musician with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera, and Washington National Opera. She has also performed as a chamber musician at the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival and Chicago’s Music of the Baroque.
Laura&nbsp;Sacks is a New York&nbsp;City-based violist who enjoys a multifaceted career. This season she looks forward to performances with the Knights, New York City Ballet, NOVUS, Experiential Orchestra, Harlem Chamber Players, Albany Symphony and Vermont Symphony, Chamber Orchestra of New York and chamber music at Brightmusic Society of Oklahoma. She&nbsp;has recently performed a season with&nbsp;the Sarasota Opera, and a summer at June in Buffalo. Laura holds a bachelor’s degree from New York University, a master’s degree from the Manhattan School of&nbsp;Music,&nbsp;and most recently completed her doctorate at&nbsp;Stony Brook University.

Steven Beck was described as “exemplary” and “deeply satisfying” by Anthony Tommasini in the New York Times. He made his concerto debut with the National Symphony Orchestra and his annual Christmas Eve performance of Bach’s Goldberg Variations at Bargemusic has become a New York institution. As an orchestral musician he has appeared with the New York Philharmonic and Orpheus.
