<a href="https://www.eastmanwinds.com/charles_mcneal" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener"> Charles McNeal</a>'s powerful and passionate virtuosity can be attested to by all who have heard or played with him. His impressive list of Jazz and R&amp;B collaborators include national names such as McCoy Tyner, Wynton Marsalis, &amp; Boz Scaggs, and local heroes Lavay Smith, Brenda Boykin, and - on our stage - Faye Carol.
Is Charles the finest saxophonist in all of NorCal? Well, that is a subjective judgement. But the fact remains, if you ask any musician who has ever crossed his path, "hey, what do you think of Charles McNeal?" you will get a string of superlatives, delivered with head-shaking wonderment.
Sam Rudin is, of course, the owner/creator of The Back Room. He is also a top-notch pianist whose versatility encompasses the whole range of 20th century music. He can evoke the spirit of Fats Waller, Oscar Peterson, Mose Allison, and Jerry Lee Lewis - sometimes all at the same time. He is also a compelling vocalist whose rough-hewn voice conveys both drama and humor.
Sam is a fearless, jump-off-the-cliff improviser, and he is very excited that his high energy performance style will be more than met by this world-class saxophonist.

45 years ago, Margie Butler and Paul Espinoza founded Golden Bough with the idea of combining Celtic music with their own original compositions. Since that time Golden Bough has recorded more than 35 albums, as well as regularly toured the U.S. and Europe. With the addition of Kathy Sierra in 2001, Golden Bough continues to be a driving force in the Celtic music scene.
Rooted in the traditional music of the seven Celtic nations (Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, The Isle of Man, French Brittany, and Spanish Galicia), Golden Bough has become a popular and in-demand group on both sides of the Atlantic. Since their formation in 1980, this trio of modern day minstrels has traveled great distances to numerous countries to bring their music to enthusiastic folk fans the world over.
Backing themselves on an array of acoustic instruments; Celtic harp, guitar, octave-mandolin, mandolin, accordion, violin, penny-whistle and bodhran, they blend their voices in the pristine harmonies that have become a Golden Bough trademark. In the recording studio, as well as on stage, Golden Bough captures the essence and joy of traditional music.

From the moment the lights dim, the room feels like a hidden 1920s speakeasy. Vintage swing rhythms, smoky blues melodies, and sultry torch songs fill the air. Roberta Donnay’s voice—rich, expressive, and full of character—guides the audience through stories of bootleggers, flappers, heartbreak, rebellion, and resilience.
The Prohibition Mob is high-energy: swinging horns, bluesy piano riffs, walking bass lines, and infectious rhythms that make it almost impossible to sit still. Whether they’re performing an upbeat swing number or a slow-burning blues ballad, their joyful chemistry is contagious.

Roberta Donnay & The Prohibition Mob: "From Bessie to Billie"

<a href="https://www.fayecarol.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">The Dynamic Miss Faye Carol</a> is known as an icon in the Bay Area and beyond, highly regarded for her powerful voice, astonishing versatility, and gift of connecting with her audience. Equally at home in jazz, blues, R&amp;B, gospel, funk, latin, and hip-hop, she has developed her own authentic sound and unique delivery, delighting audiences young and old across the globe.
After beginning her career with gospel music, Faye Carol made her name singing with Oakland blues and funk legend Johnny Talbot &amp; De Thangs in the 1960s. She soon formed her own trio and gained fame in San Francisco's jazz, blues, and cabaret clubs of the 1970s and 80s. Over a 60-year career in music, this living legend has developed her own unique acoustic sound and style in Black Music - drawing from funk, blues, gospel, and straight ahead swingin' - and cultivated an audience that remains as diverse as her uplifting music.
She has maintained a high level of musicianship in her groups, mentoring some of the Bay Area's brightest young talent including Benny Green, Marcus Shelby, and her daughter Kito Kamili. Her vocal proteges include international superstars Kehlani and Ledisi. Miss Faye has shared the stage with Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Joe Tex, Martha Reeves &amp; The Vandellas, Ray Charles, Gene Ammons, Pharaoh Sanders, Joan Baez, Billy Higgins, Albert King, Bobby Hutcherson, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Buster Williams, Azar Lawrence, Steve Turre, Dennis Chambers, Bernard Purdie, Lenny White, Robert Randolph, Mistah F.A.B., Henry Butler, Gary Bartz, Cedar Walton, Ledisi, Billy Hart, Roy McCurdy, Mike Clark, Casey Benjamin, Philly Joe Jones, Lady Tramaine Hawkins, Houston Person, Vi Redd, Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts, Dayna Stephens, Dorothy Donegan, Pete Escovedo, David Murray, Chester Thompson, Charles Brown, and Eddie 'Cleanhead' Vinson, among others.
Miss Faye is also a dedicated educator and community activist and founder of School of The Getdown. School of The Getdown has presented arts education and performance programs throughout the Bay Area for over 25 years, with the mission of celebrating Black arts and sharing these cultural traditions with diverse Bay Area communities, with particular attention towards youth and the Black community. School of The Getdown programs include an annual Youth Arts Camp, after school arts programs for youth, the annual Black Women’s Roots Festival, Black History Month programs in underserved schools, the annual Black Music Month Festival, masterclasses with visiting artists, and commissioned artistic works celebrating Black culture.
Faye Carol has been honored with the proclamation of a city-wide “Faye Carol Day” in the City of Berkeley and City of Oakland and inducted into the Oakland Walk of Fame, the Meridian Mississippi Walk of Fame, and the Pittsburg Entertainment &amp; Arts Hall of Fame, and has received countless awards, including the Bay Area Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Hero Award, Jefferson Award for Public Service, four Cabaret Gold Awards, Top Star Awards Entertainer of the Year, the Hewlett 50 Arts Commission, and the Walter &amp; Elise Haas Fund Creative Power Award.

Elizabeth and the Catapult return to The Back Room to celebrate the long-awaited release of her sixth record, Responsible Friend.
Based on letters written but never sent, the new record is a deeply personal collection dedicated to those closest to her — songs that move through friendship, grief, tenderness, humor, and the quiet (or sometimes not-so-quiet) work of learning how to show up for one another. Created with producer Dan Molad (of Lucius), Adam Minkoff (of the Graham Nash band), and Jon Titterington (of Father John Misty), the album blooms with cinematic, spirited arrangements that feel both intimate and expansive.
For this special release show, Elizabeth is joined by Jon Titterington on piano and guitar.
With classical-meets-Beatles-esque harmonies, a Nina Simone–inspired piano sensibility, and the emotional world of Rufus Wainwright, Feist, and Tom Waits — plus a dash of wit in the spirit of Sara Silverman — expect moments of silliness, storytelling, and plenty of improvisation in this one-night-only celebration of connection and the beautiful mess of caring for each other.

<a href="https://www.fredrandolph.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener"> Fred Randolph</a> is a multifaceted bassist, composer, and bandleader known for his warm, swinging sound and fiery solos. He was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. Fred’s passion for music, particularly jazz, led him to study ukulele, guitar, saxophone, trumpet, flute, and piano before settling on his main instrument, the bass.
He has released 4 CDs under his own name and has composed music for the films “Love Twice” and “Fourth Movement,” directed by Rob Nilsson. Fred maintains a busy schedule both as a freelance bassist and as a bandleader/composer. He is director of instrumental music at Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland, California, and holds a masters degree in music composition from CSUEB in Hayward.
The Fred Randolph Quintet is made up of five of the most sought after Bay Area musicians, including pianist Murray Low, drummer Brian Fishler, trumpeter Erik Jekabson, and multi-reed player Sheldon Brown.
His 4 CD releases are Learning Curve, New Day, Song Without Singing, and the recent Mood Walk, all released on his own Creative Spirit Records label.
JW Magazine says of Randolph’s most recent recording (Mood Walk):“Stylistically eclectic, supremely grooving, endlessly fascinating masterwork… a rambunctious, twist, turn and improvisation-filled set.”

Award-winning pianist, composer, and singer <a href="https://larrymcdonoughjazz.homestead.com/Biography.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Larry McDonough</a> returns to bring the legendary pianist and composer Bill Evans back to life in a solo show covering the music and personal life of Bill Evans that has filled rooms in across the country. The show includes piano and voice, spoken word, and commentary on the life of Bill Evans.
Evans performed on the Miles Davis album "Kind of Blue" in 1959, the best-selling jazz album ever. His trio with bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian introduced simultaneous improvisation and is regarded as a seminal modern jazz trio. He received 31 Grammy nominations and seven awards, and was inducted into the DownBeat Jazz Hall of Fame.
McDonough recorded his 2025 Back Room show for his new CD, Conversations with Bill Evans. He will perform selections from the CD along with songs of other pianists who worked with Miles Davis.
Vocalist Lorin Bond will join McDonough for a few new songs.

It's spring and we're ready for a knotty, twisted and wickedly fun workshop! In class, each ticket holder will receive a demo ball of chilled pretzel dough to learn how to portion, roll and twist into pretzels. We’ll make traditional twists, unusual twists, and your creations. Our spring 2026 classes are emphasizing animal shapes like an octopus, a turtle, a snail, or a snake!
 The in-class demo will cover:
How to make spent grain pretzel dough using the Grainbakers method
How to make hot cheddar cheese pub dip for your pretzels
 Each ticket holder will leave class with:
4-6 ready-to-eat hot soft pretzels and a few pretzels ready to freeze when you get them home.

Grainbakers teaches an advanced version of the baking soda method - Sodium Carbonate. We do not teach the Lye Method.

After two very successful shows last year, <a href="https://brassackwards.com/home" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Brass Ackwards</a> is back with lots of new material, original and otherwise, and once again featuring their special guest vocalist, Dana Bauer, joining the band to sing several new pieces.
Brass Ackwards is not your granddad’s brass quintet. In fact they are not even a quintet, having added a drummer to augment their presentation. Their line-up is two trumpets, three trombones, a drummer and an occasional vocalist. They offer a unique sound featuring lots of original material written specifically for Brass Ackwards. Their musical styles are eclectic and broad, from Big Band to Beatles, and there are always several surprises throughout the evening.
Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Children under 12 are free. Advance tickets are available here, or if the show is not sold out, you may purchase your tickets at the door before the show.
Doors open 30 minutes before show time. We accept cash or Venmo only at the door.
The Back Room is an all-ages, BYOB (for those 21+) space, dedicated to (mostly) acoustic music of all kinds. You are welcome to bring your own food and beverages. The venue is ADA accessible. If you need more information or have any questions, please call us: #510-381-1997.
