The Virginia Museum of History Culture is proud to welcome world-renowned chef Patrick O’Connell to celebrate the launch of his first-ever memoir! World-renowned chef Patrick O’Connell has been recognized as a pioneer of American cuisine; his internationally acclaimed restaurant in the Virginia countryside, the Inn at Little Washington, is Michelin starred and a Relais &amp; Châteaux hotel. Named for the three historic streets in the little town where O’Connell’s life and career have taken root, Main, Middle &amp; Gay chronicles O’Connell’s winding journey through the rough-and-tumble restaurant world. Growing up gay in the 1950s and working as a paperboy and a cook at a hamburger joint, O’Connell found his place with other misfits in the addictive restaurant scene, where he learned to be nimble and grew up fast while working long hours and late nights with colorful characters. He lived free-spirited on farms with friends and traveled Europe, teaching himself to cook along the way. When he opened his restaurant in an old abandoned garage, he had no idea it would grow to the heights it has achieved today. All ticket purchases include one signed copy of Main, Middle &amp; Gay, which will be available for pickup at the VMHC on the night of the event. Join us at The Poe Museum on Thursday, September 17th for a Tell-Tale Talk with author Lyndsay Faye, who will discuss her upcoming novel, RAVEN, to be released in October.
About RAVEN:
An orphaned young woman in antebellum Maryland is pulled into a maelstrom of passion, pain, and occult power in this Gothic homage to the life and works of Edgar Allan Poe.
I died a fortnight ago this coming Thursday. It was a terrifically unpleasant experience—being murdered, I mean to say.
Raven Helen Allan has always been haunted by witchcraft. Since the death of her beloved mother, she has soothed herself by speaking words into spells—a proclivity enhanced by time spent with her aunt’s library of occult books. She also finds a self-destructive solace in transmuting the pain in her heart onto her flesh.
After an itinerant childhood spent first with her mother’s traveling theater troupe and then being passed around from relative to relative, Raven is relieved to finally settle down with Aunt Berenice in her Baltimore townhouse—even if her aunt spends most evenings in a laudanum haze. There she finds a long-sought sense of belonging with the family of enslaved workers in her aunt’s household, especially the brilliantly odd youngest daughter Pym. Raven’s infatuation with her friend only grows more intimate as the girls become women together. But when the household is threatened with financial ruin, Raven must set out to earn her own living.
Taking a job as a paid companion, Raven arrives at the crumbling Moldavia Manor. Her charge is a delicate young invalid named Lenore Legrand who haunts the Gothic structure like a phantom. Living with them is Lenore’s devoted older cousin Travanion, who shares Raven’s interest in the occult and devotes his days to searching ancient texts for an Elixir of Life that might cure his cousin. Raven finds herself inexorably drawn to both cousins as well as to the secrets hidden in the shadows of Moldavia Manor. Will she find the answers she seeks in Trevanion’s alchemical texts? What is the meaning of glowing green light emitted from the tower windows? And is Raven truly narrating this story from beyond the grave—if so, who murdered her?
Gothic and atmospheric, Raven is an aching tale of loss, freedom, death, and resurrection by the celebrated author of Jane Steele and Dust and Shadow.
Lyndsay Faye is the internationally bestselling author of eight critically acclaimed novels and two short story collections. She has been published in fifteen languages, nominated for two Edgar Awards, and received an American Library Association award for Best Historical Novel. A notable writer of Sherlock Holmes pastiches including Dust and Shadow and Observations by Gaslight, she also particularly enjoys upending classical literature, as in Jane Steele, which transforms Jane Eyre into a feminist serial killer. A true New Yorker in the sense that she was born elsewhere, Faye lives in Queens with her husband Nicholas and her cat Prufrock.

When a relationship ends, it can feel like the earth has shifted beneath you. Divorce, separation, or parting from a partner can bring waves of grief—but healing is possible.
For 36 years, Divorce Recovery Workshop (DRW) at Richmond’s First Baptist Church has been a lifeline for thousands of people in these moments—a place to find understanding, strength, and hope when the future feels uncertain.
Eight consecutive Sunday sessions from 5-7:30 p.m. in Flamming Hall. The cost with pre-registration is $75 by September 17, $85 after.
We welcome the young and elementary school-age children of our participants: we provide child care for babies through pre-school age children and we offer age-appropriate activities and programming for kindergarteners through 5th graders. These offerings are FREE and your child will be provided snacks or a light meal.
We approach this program as an outreach to all people with our mission to help anyone who is suffering. People of all faiths, or none, are warmly welcomed. We do not evangelize, preach, read scripture, or proselytize during the workshop. We offer a program to help everyone who is suffering from the loss of a love relationship to heal from the emotional pain of their loss.

About the Artist: Comedian and actress Steph Tolev’s debut hour special FILTH QUEEN premiered on Netflix June 24th, produced by Bill Burr. Steph also appeared as “Barb” in the second season of Shane Gillis’ Netflix series TIRES. Steph’s no-holds-barred and unfiltered comedy made her a perfect choice to host the 2025 AVN AWARDS in Las Vegas earlier this year, the first female comedian to host in a decade. As part of the Virginia Museum of History &amp; Culture's 250th Initiative, join the VMHC and The Queen Sofía Spanish Institute for a special evening commemorating the Spanish politicians, generals, and merchants who played a vital role shaping the outcome of the American Revolution.&nbsp;
The evening’s keynote address will be given by Dr. Gonzalo M. Quintero Saravia, a senior Spanish diplomat, author of several books on 18th-century Spanish American history, and a former Fellow at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University.

About the Book:
In pursuit of a more ethical way of eating, Zackary Vernon moved to Boone, North Carolina. While volunteering, working, and interviewing people related to the ethical food movement, he struggled with extreme views on both sides of the issue. He wondered: can you be an ethical eater without fully sacrificing pleasure and joy? While there are no easy answers, open_in_newVernon, a professor of English at Appalachian State University, offers ways for us to fail better as we consider how to eat more ethically in the future. He is also the author of the debut novel, Our Bodies Electric, editor of Ecocriticism and the Future of Southern Studies, and co-editor of Summoning the Dead: Essays on Ron Rash.
About the Author:
Zackary Vernon lives in Boone, NC, where he's on the faculty at Appalachian State University. He is the author of the debut novel, Our Bodies Electric, editor of Ecocriticism and the Future of Southern Studies, and co-editor of Summoning the Dead: Essays on Ron Rash. His creative nonfiction has been published in magazines and journals, such as Salvation South, The Bitter Southerner, North Carolina Literary Review, and Carolina Quarterly.  Dr. Jessica Martell is an interdisciplinary scholar who specializes in literature, food, film, and the environment. She is the open_in_newFulbright-Queen's University Belfast Scholar in Irish Studies, 2025-2026. She is the author of Farm to Form: Modernist Literature and Ecologies of Food in the British Empire (University of Nevada Press, 2020), which investigates the relationship between the industrial food of empire and the emergence of literary modernisms in Britain and Ireland. Eating on a Mountain at the End of the World with Zackary Vernon

For nearly the entirety of our history, Americans have been arguing about George Washington and slavery. Drawing on research from his latest book, historian John Garrison Marks will explore how generations of Americans have remembered, forgotten, manipulated, and wielded Washington’s entanglements with slavery over the past 250 years. As both a prolific enslaver for his entire life as well as the emancipator of more than 120 of the people he enslaved, George Washington’s complex relationship with slavery has vexed Americans for centuries. Time and again, we’ve struggled to agree upon slavery’s place in Washington’s legacy. In this lecture, Marks will explore how abolitionists, politicians, educators, museum professionals, descendants of slavery at Mount Vernon, and countless others have all fought to shape our collective memory of George Washington and slavery over the last two centuries—and what those fights reveal about our ongoing struggle to reckon with the past.
Dr. John Garrison Marks is a historian and writer exploring the United States’ histories of race, slavery, and public memory. He earned his Ph.D. in history from Rice University. Marks currently works as the Vice President of Research and Engagement for the American Association for State and Local History. His writing has appeared in the Washington Post, TIME, Smithsonian Magazine, and elsewhere. He is the author/editor of three books,&nbsp;Race and Nation in the Age of Emancipations&nbsp;(edited with Whitney Nell Stewart);&nbsp;Black Freedom in the Age of Slavery: Race, Status, and Identity in the Urban Americas; and&nbsp;Thy Will Be Done: George Washington's Legacy of Slavery and the Fight for American Memory.

His earlier books include Dodging and Burning and The Savage Kind, which won the Lambda Literary Award for Best LGBTQ Mystery. He co-edited Crime Ink: Iconic and serves on the board of International Thriller Writers. Join the VMHC for the fourth annual Conrad M. Hall Symposium for Virginia History, an event where historians, practitioners, and members of the public will gather to explore our shared past. Beginning the day will be a special keynote lecture from award-winning journalist Tom Gjelten on his book A Nation of Nations: A Great American Immigration Story, which looks at the profound demographic changes in the United States since the 1965 Immigration Act. Gjelten tells this story through a special focus on Fairfax County, Virginia, sharing the experiences of several immigrant families that illustrate broader themes of the immigrant experience. Tom Gjelten is a veteran journalist and author of Sarajevo Daily: A City and Its Newspaper Under Siege and Bacardi and the Long Fight for Cuba: The Biography of a Cause. Over a thirty-year career as a correspondent for NPR News, he has covered wars in Central America, the Middle East, and the former Yugoslavia, as well as major national stories in the United States. His NPR reporting has won him two Overseas Press Club Awards, a George Polk Award, and a Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award. He has appeared as a panelist on the PBS program Washington Week, is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and is a member of the Editorial Board at World Affairs Journal. Guests will then have the opportunity to hear from 11 panels comprising more than 30 experts from across the Commonwealth during a full day of engaging presentations that highlight groundbreaking research into Virginia history around the theme of "Migration." This year's presenters will cover such varied topics as loyalism during the American Revolution, the use of public art in telling stories of migration, immigrants’ involvement in public service to the U.S., migration and movement during slavery, and many more. In addition to compelling panel discussions, guests will have access to tailored museum experiences that highlight migration in Virginia. Ending the day will be a reception for guests and speakers to mingle and reflect on the day’s learning. Tickets to the event include museum admission, the keynote lecture, all panel discussions, and an evening reception.
