About the Author:
Hayley DeRoche is a humorist and poet, and the creator of the viral “Sad Biege” TikTok series. Her work has been covered by the BBC, Washington Post, New York Times, and more. She lives with her family near Richmond, Virginia, where she is also a public open_in_newlibrarian.
Jessie Gaynor is a senior editor at Literary Hub. Her debut novel The Glow was published in 2023. Her work has appeared in Mother Tongue, McSweeney's Internet Tendency, The New Yorker, Dirt, and elsewhere. She has an MFA in poetry from the Iowa Writers' Workshop, where she was a Rona Jaffe fellow. Her next novel, I Can Tell That Hurts, will be published by Random House in 2027.

In commemoration of Barbara Rose Johns Day, Dr. Brian Daugherity will discuss recently conducted archival research related to school desegregation and the civil rights era in Prince Edward County, Virginia. Dr. Daugherity will show and discuss new information that sheds light on, and raises additional questions about, the steps leading to Brown v. Board of Education, and about segregationist resistance to school desegregation in the county.
Dr. Brian Daugherity is a professor of history at Virginia Commonwealth University. His research focuses on the implementation of the Supreme Court’s 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision in Virginia. Dr. Daugherity has published and edited many works including&nbsp;With All Deliberate Speed: Implementing Brown v. Board of Education&nbsp;(2008),&nbsp;Keep On Keeping On: The NAACP and the Implementation of Brown v. Board of Education in Virginia&nbsp;(2016), and&nbsp;A Little Child Shall Lead Them: A Documentary Account of the Struggle for School Desegregation in Prince Edward County, Virginia&nbsp;(2019). He is currently co-producing a 60- minute documentary film on the historic Green v. New Kent County (1968) U.S. Supreme Court decision.
Following the lecture, guests are encouraged to view the maquette of the Barbara Rose Johns statue that represents Virginia in the United States Capitol’s Statuary Hall. Unveiled on December 16, 2025, Barbara Johns’s statue stands alongside George Washington as the two representatives from Virginia. Join VMHC for a documentary screening and talkback of CULTURE KEEPERS: Voices of the Land, which centers the lived experiences of Virginia tribal citizens who have preserved their identity, heritage, and community across generations. Through powerful stories of resistance, pride, and cultural transmission, the film reveals how traditions endured despite attempts at erasure such as the Racial Integrity Act of 1924. CULTURE KEEPERS is a tribute to those who continue to carry and pass on the fire of their people.
CULTURE KEEPERS is screened as part of the Created Equal Film Series in honor of Grady W. Powell and in partnership with The Community Foundation for a greater Richmond.

Prince's life and work left a lasting impression on the world. Our guests for this event will be sharing their firsthand experiences with him and talking about Steve's gorgeous photography book to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Prince's passing.
 About the Book:

 About the Author:
Steve Parke is an award-winning illustrator, designer, and photographer. He worked for Prince for 13 years as his in-house art director at Paisley Park. He’s also worked with many other artists, both as a photographer and a designer of numerous album covers and promotional materials and merchandise. He is currently a photographer and photo editor for Enchanted Living Magazine and is working on a book photo project for Simon &amp; Schuster written by Alice Hoffman.
 Prince discovered Paul Peterson, aka “St Paul,” at the age of 17, enlisting him as a keyboard player in “The Time” for the movie “Purple Rain.” Paul took the lead vocalist spot in the Prince-produced group “The Family” before becoming a solo artist.

Join VMHC for a day of free homeschool admission, crafts, and games themed around our newest temporary exhibition,&nbsp;We the People: The World in Our Commonwealth. This exhibition presents the stories of individuals born in 68 countries who sought freedom, opportunity, and refuge by immigrating to the United States. Pairing historic accounts with contemporary stories, immersive environments with personal objects, the exhibition highlights the profound way immigrants have both shaped and been shaped by Virginia and this nation.&nbsp;
Participants will have the opportunity to tour this exhibition, along with VMHC's other galleries, participate in a scavenger hunt highlighting immigration stories throughout Virginia's history, and learn about crafts &amp; games that highlight cultures on display in the exhibition. This is a drop in program and participants are welcome to arrive anytime they like. Please register to allow our team to prep the appropriate amount of materials!
Games &amp; Crafts Include:
&nbsp; Paper Weaving (Mali) &nbsp; Colorful Lanterns, or Fanous (Egypt) &nbsp; Vase Decorating (Greece) &nbsp; Daruma Otoshi - a classic stacking game (Japan) &nbsp; Yut Nori - a fast paced bord game (South Korea) We will also have representatives from the Italian American Cultural Association and Organization of Chinese Americans - Central Virginia Chapter onsite to talk about their history, as well as a Mexican Street Corn Cooking Demo from Young Chef's Academy!

Camp Wilton is a free, family-friendly open house that brings Revolutionary War and colonial history to life through hands-on, interactive experiences for all ages. Inspired by the two-week encampment of&nbsp;Marquis de Lafayette&nbsp;and Continental forces at Wilton in May 1781, the event highlights the historic 1753 house and its role as a gathering place for military and Virginia leaders during the Revolution.&nbsp; Designed for immersive family learning, Camp Wilton features living history interpretation, demonstrations, and engaging programs rooted in historical scholarship. Guests can step into a pivotal moment of the Revolution, meeting Lafayette, enjoying historic puppet shows, playing colonial games, trying doll making, and encountering the realities of Revolutionary War military life, including medical interpretation.
