Virginia Museum of History & Culture

Fully half the enslaved people in the South lived not on sprawling plantations but on small properties; this pattern prevailed in much of Virginia. Testimony from criminal trials in Prince Edward County reveals that cruelty was baked into the system, but also that in households of five, ten, fifteen, or twenty people, exploiters and exploited knew each other well. The enslaved, enslavers, overseers, and poor whites drank, played, slept, and even committed crimes together. Yet whippings happened often, enslaved families were split up, and in 1861, most white men in Prince Edward County were ready to fight to defend the right to own other human beings. White Virginians recognized the humanity of their Black neighbors even as they remained committed to a system that abused and sometimes terrorized them. Dr. Melvin Ely’s lecture will take a close look at interracial life in slaveholding Virginia.
Dr. Melvin Patrick Ely is the William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Humanities, History, at the College of William &amp; Mary. He researches and teaches the history of Black Americans, the South, popular culture and media, and race and ethnicity. Before joining William &amp; Mary, he taught at Yale University, where he received both the Prize for Outstanding Scholarly Publication and Research and the Prize for Teaching Excellence, and he served as Fulbright Professor of American Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Dr. Ely is the author of The Adventures of Amos ‘n’ Andy: A Social History of an American Phenomenon; Israel on the Appomattox: A Southern Experiment in Black Freedom from the 1790s through the Civil War, winner of the Bancroft Prize, the Albert J. Beveridge Award, and the Library of Virginia Literary Award for Nonfiction; and, most recently, A Terrible Intimacy: Interracial Life in the Slaveholding South.

Art Against Brutality brings a much-needed contribution to the field of community arts. It offers healing for survivors of terror in Latin America (El Salvador, Guatemala, Colombia, Argentina, México) and with Indigenous people of California in the United States. It outlines truly collaborative approaches, based on ideas from the community participants, rather than shaped by the facilitating artist. Often the form of the art project is a mural, in which the participants decide on the theme and storyline.

As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, a rare and timely opportunity arises to share a story that has never been fully told—the story of horses of Monticello. This book opens a window into Thomas Jefferson’s world, where horses were not only essential to transportation and farming, but also to the rhythm of daily life at Monticello. Horses of Monticello is more than history on a page. It brings to life the elegance, utility, and symbolism of horses in early America, connecting Jefferson’s mountaintop home to the broader story of the nation’s founding. The book offers readers an intimate glimpse of the animals that carried ideas, goods, and people across a growing country, illuminating the deep relationship between horses and the American experiment in liberty.
Dr. Carrie Bess Douglass is Emeritus Professor of Anthropology at Mary Baldwin University and the University of Virginia. She began her research about Jefferson’s horses in 2008 as a Fellow at the International Center of Jefferson Studies, located at Monticello. She is the author of&nbsp;The Horses of Monticello: Equine Culture in Thomas Jefferson’s Virginia.

About the Book: When twenty-three-year-old Eileen O’Malley meets charismatic naval officer Paul Archer in a Charleston department store, she doesn’t expect to fall so hard, so fast. But Paul is funny and ambitious, and soon, Eileen’s got a ring on her finger and is following him to the tiny, sun-drenched Mediterranean island of La Maddalena, where Paul will be heading up Radiological Controls aboard a submarine tender. In La Maddalena, Eileen joins a makeshift community of navy wives who are hell-bent on making the island feel a little more like home. Lua is a cultural pollinator, blending musical styles across continents and centuries. Their work explores themes of family, community, labor, and loss, drawing on Mexican and Appalachian traditions, Eastern European tonalities, baroque melodies, and narrative storytelling to create a living, evolving musical tradition.

About the Artist: 
Declared by The Huffington Post as “the real hero of sitcom TV,” Patricia Williams (aka Ms. Pat) is a comedian, author, radio host, podcaster, and actress. Her critically acclaimed multi-cam series The Ms. Pat Show, produced by Lee Daniels and Brian Grazer, premiered its fourth season in May 2024. The series is streaming on BET+ and Paramount+ with an edited version airing on BET linear. The premiere of the show shattered viewership records on the streamer almost crashing the app and garnered Emmy nominations in the “Outstanding Direction for a Comedy Series” category in 2022 and 2023. The Ms. Pat Show, based on Pat’s real-life story of an inner-city drug dealer turned suburban mom, has been a hit with fans and critics alike. Overview

TwelveStone Health Partners will host a ribbon cutting and open house to celebrate the opening of its new infusion center in Newport News, Virginia. The event will bring together members of the local business and healthcare community, area providers and the public to tour the facility and learn more about TwelveStone’s approach to chronic condition management.

The Newport News center marks TwelveStone’s 37th location and expands the company’s presence in Virginia and the broader Southeast.

Why It Matters

The new center is designed to make complex medication support and infusion therapy more accessible for patients in the Virginia Peninsula. TwelveStone’s infusion centers provide a patient-centered care model in a comfortable outpatient setting, helping patients with chronic, complex conditions receive treatment closer to home.

Event Details

The event will begin with a ribbon cutting ceremony in partnership with the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce. Following the ceremony, guests are invited to attend an open house, tour the facility and meet members of the TwelveStone care team. Light refreshments will be provided.
