Barbara Franco will share her findings from a ten-year project to identify the surgeons who cared for the wounded at the battle of Gettysburg. A database of more than 1,200 surgeons, both Union and Confederate, is the basis for her new book, Gettysburg Surgeons: Facing a Common Enemy in the Civil War’s Deadliest Battle. The study includes not only well-documented and prominent physicians who left written accounts, but also the lesser-known surgeons who were part of a complex system of doctors and caretakers both during and after the battle. In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage (AAPI) Month, join the VMHC and Department of Historic Resources (DHR) to learn more about the work these two groups are doing to collect, preserve, and share AAPI stories in Virginia.
DHR was recently awarded grant funds to support the documentation of historic sites associated with the AAPI Community in Virginia, such as Eden Center – a shopping center in Falls Church that is significant to the Vietnamese American community in Northern Virginia. Staff from DHR will talk through the process of identifying and adding properties like these to the historic record. In addition, VMHC will share AAPI stories associated with their newest temporary exhibition, We the People: The World in Our Commonwealth.

Lunch & Learn: Preserving and Sharing Asian American & Pacific Islander History in Virginia

Join VMHC for a documentary screening and talkback of Headwaters Down: Tidal River. Following five friends traveling on the water, Tidal River tells the story of the final 110 miles of the James, stretching from Richmond to the Chesapeake Bay. Tidal River focuses on the widest and most historic section of the James. A place of environmental disaster and recovery, the tidal waters of the James surprise the crew with their beauty, complexity, and wisdom.
Headwaters Down: Tidal River is screened as part of the Created Equal Film Series in honor of Grady W. Powell and in partnership with The Community Foundation for a greater Richmond.
