SHOWTIMES: 7:30PM AND 9:30PM. Two-time GRAMMY-nominated trumpeter, composer, arranger and producer Russell Gunn returns with one of his most ambitious statements yet: Afrikan-Amerikan Book of the Dead: The Book of Going Forth By Any Means Necessary, a provocative seven-song work that draws inspiration from the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead and reimagines the idea of a spiritual guide through the history, identity, resilience and forward movement of Black Americans. Featuring six original Gunn compositions and a Duke Ellington classic, the project brings together the fearless musical language that has defined Gunn’s career—jazz steeped in the Black musical continuum, alive with gospel, funk, hip-hop, groove and uncompromising improvisation. The album also introduces Blackhawk, Gunn’s hand-selected ensemble whose name pays tribute to Miles Davis’ legendary In Person Friday and Saturday Nights at the Blackhawk, the recording Gunn credits with profoundly shaping his understanding of how jazz should feel. At its heart, however, Afrikan-Amerikan Book of the Dead is not a meditation on death, but an affirmation of life: music concerned with knowing who you are, understanding what came before you and moving forward with purpose, pride and possibility. On October 16 and 17, The Velvet Note Signature Series welcomes Russell Gunn + Blackhawk for an extraordinary album-release weekend, placing this powerful new music exactly where it belongs—in an intimate room, just feet from the audience, alive and unfolding in real time.Happens on the following Dates:

Roman Street, named for an old roman street in the Alps where they studied guitar, is an internationally trained instrumental band specializing in improvisational fusion of Classical, Gypsy and Contemporary Jazz, Latin, and Nuevo Flamenco. Showtimes: 7:30p and 9:30p. Lori Williams doesn’t simply sing a song—she inhabits it. An internationally acclaimed jazz vocalist with more than three decades of performance, recording and music-education experience, Williams brings a rare combination of sophistication, sensuality and emotional truth to the stage. Her voice moves effortlessly from the elegance of traditional jazz to the warmth of soul and contemporary grooves, and her career has taken her from celebrated jazz rooms and festivals across the United States to stages throughout Europe, Japan and the Caribbean. Along the way, she has performed and collaborated with an extraordinary roster of artists including Stanley Clarke, Nathan East, George Duke, Peabo Bryson, Norman Brown and Terri Lyne Carrington.
But Lori Williams’ influence extends well beyond the microphone. A respected educator, mentor, songwriter, producer and advocate for the music, she currently serves as a Governor on the Atlanta Chapter Board of the Recording Academy—the organization behind the GRAMMY Awards. On Friday, October 30th, The Velvet Note welcomes Lori into one of the most intimate listening rooms in America, where every breath, every lyric and every beautifully bent note can be experienced up close. Laura Ardan: One of the United States’ most respected clarinetists, Laura Ardan recently retired from the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra after serving as principal clarinet for 39 years, holding the endowed Robert Shaw Chair. In 2018 Ardan was awarded the Mabel Dorn Reeder Honorary Chair by the ASO. She has been a featured soloist in works by Mozart, Weber, Debussy, Copland, Bernstein, Finzi, Rossini, Shaw, and Michael Gandolfi.
Always an active chamber musician, Ms. Ardan has played and recorded regularly with the Emory Chamber Music Society of Atlanta, the Atlanta Chamber Players and the Georgian Chamber Players. The Vega String Quartet, Quartet-in-Residence at Emory University, is cultivating a new generation of chamber music lovers through dynamic performances and innovative community engagement. Times praised their “triumphant L.A. debut.” Winners of four of the top six prizes at the Bordeaux String Quartet Competition, including the International Critics Prize, the Vega Quartet tours extensively throughout Europe, Asia and North America.
