Volunteering is a most satisfying way to give back to your community.

The American Red Cross (ARC) is just one place; but, it is incredibly rewarding. This is especially true of Blood Services. Donating blood is a great place to start. Donating blood is critical; but, only 37 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood - less than 10 percent do so annually. About one in seven people entering a hospital need blood.

As a Blood Drive Donor Ambassador (those that volunteer at drives) or a Blood Program Leader (those who volunteer to coordinate drives for sponsoring organizations), you have a much broader view of all the work involved and all the good it does. Your commitment need not be excessive. The more volunteers; the lighter the load.

And, if should you be or know a retiree who is whining about being bored and vegetating in an easy chair complaining that there is nothing to do, you just have not looked. There is no shortage of community service organizations that can use all levels and quantities of help. The American Red Cross (ARC) could be a good place for you to start.
