ChamberFest&nbsp;Cleveland is thrilled to open its 14th season in CIM’s recently renovated Kulas Hall with a colorful cornucopia of music from (almost) every continent.&nbsp;Virtuosic drumming from&nbsp;djembefola Weedie&nbsp;Braimah&nbsp;leads&nbsp;to reimaginings&nbsp;of everything from an ancient Chinese tale to a clock museum, Steve Reich’s iconic&nbsp;Piano Phase, and a playful piano trio by a composer called “Australia’s classical techno-head.” The&nbsp;second&nbsp;string sextet by Brahms is both wistful and tumultuous, with every nuance exquisitely amplified by the hall’s extraordinary acoustics.Weedie Braimah Djembe Solo Steve Reich Piano Phase Yang Baozhi Ambush on All Sides Miguel del Águila Clocks: I. Dunham Tavern Museum & Gardens

Violinist Kerson Leong has been on a meteoric rise since winning first prize at the International Yehudi Menuhin Violin Competition in 2010. Hand-picked by Yannick Nézet-Séguin to be&nbsp;Artist-in-Residence with the Orchestre Métropolitain de Montréal and with over 100,000 followers on Instagram, the Canadian phenom celebrates his&nbsp;ChamberFest debut season with a ravishing recital packed with poetry and breathtaking virtuosity.

Harkness Chapel

Into the luminous setting of Harkness Chapel, with its&nbsp;Tiffany stained glass windows and exquisite acoustics, bursts the volcanic energy of an irrepressible sextet inspired by techno beats, followed by a violin sonata “in Romanian folk style” that feels like a freely evolving improvisation. Imbued with a rich autumnal tone, Arensky’s sumptuous piano trio moves through torrents of stormy bravado before coming to a tenderly nostalgic close.

This evocative program&nbsp;opens with&nbsp;a contemporary multimedia meditation, fusing&nbsp;stunning visual projections&nbsp;from&nbsp;Native artists&nbsp;with music by a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation dedicated to the development of American Indian classical composition. A century earlier, Ernest Bloch, the founding Director of the Cleveland Institute of Music,&nbsp;wrote&nbsp;his boldly original&nbsp;piano&nbsp;quintet, which melds a gritty urban tone with moments of lyrical reflection. A&nbsp;witty and lighthearted&nbsp;piano trio by Mozart opens&nbsp;the evening.

Franklin Cohen is not only the Founding Father (literally) of&nbsp;ChamberFest Cleveland, he is&nbsp;one of the most outstanding clarinetists, musicians, and teachers of his generation. With a professional career&nbsp;that includes&nbsp;a historic tenure as Principal Clarinet of The Cleveland Orchestra, two Grammy awards, and 50 years on faculty at CIM, Frank’s extraordinary legacy is well worth celebrating. (Plus,&nbsp;he’s&nbsp;turning 80 this summer!) Colleagues, alumni, friends, and musical family share the stage for an unforgettable tribute to “one of the most cultivated proponents of the instrument walking the earth.”

This&nbsp;triptych of works begins&nbsp;with&nbsp;a charming&nbsp;sonata&nbsp;for a colorful variety of instruments featuring the dance rhythms of the Spanish Baroque. Then Composer-in-Residence Benjamin Yusupov draws on musical sources from various ethnic Jewish communities around the globe, evoking the sounds of klezmer and cimbalom. Finally, Aaron Copland described his iconic Pulitzer prize-winning&nbsp;Appalachian Spring&nbsp;as&nbsp;representing&nbsp;“the&nbsp;pioneer American spirit, with youth and spring, with optimism and hope.”
