While early players such as Fats Waller and the deep influence of gospel traditions helped establish the instrument’s place in jazz, its defining moment came in the 1950s. With his electrifying command of the Hammond B-3, Jimmy Smith transformed the organ from a fringe curiosity into one of jazz’s most recognizable voices. This evolution is at the center of the Colorado Jazz Repertory Orchestra’s program,&nbsp;Jazz Organ Blues, which explores the sound that grew from these roots—blending blues, swing, and hard bop into a style that remains a vital part of the jazz tradition.
Honoring the tradition shaped by artists such as Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Shirley Scott, and other jazz greats, CJRO Artistic Director&nbsp;Drew Zaremba&nbsp;takes his seat at the organ. He is joined by Steve Kovalcheck (guitar), Jim White (drums), and vocalist Tatiana LadyMay Mayfield.

Art Pepper&nbsp;remains one of the most emotionally direct and unmistakable voices in West Coast jazz, celebrated for his luminous alto saxophone tone and deeply expressive phrasing. One of the most compelling voices in jazz today, Swift brings a dynamic style that moves across genres while staying rooted in tradition. “We’re incredibly excited to present our first concert with Veronica Swift,” said CJRO Artistic Director Drew Zaremba. “She is not only an impeccable vocalist, but she also shares our commitment to exploring jazz alongside America’s rich musical heritage. We’re cooking up some special arrangements to premiere at this concert, and we can’t wait to see you there!”&nbsp;
Veronica Swift&nbsp;has established herself as one of her generation’s defining voices in jazz. As a child, she toured nationally with her parents—jazz musicians Hod O’Brien and Stephanie Nakasian—appearing at leading clubs and festivals including Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, Jazz Standard (NYC), Jazz Showcase (Chicago), and the Telluride Jazz Festival. She recorded her first album at age nine and has since built a career spanning two decades.&nbsp;
Her credits include a second-place finish in the 2015 Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition, a twice-yearly residency at Birdland Jazz Club, touring with Chris Botti and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, and recording with Jeff Goldblum. Her 2021 album&nbsp;This Bitter Earth&nbsp;earned a five-star review and the cover of&nbsp;DownBeat, and in 2024, she was named a Chevalier in France’s Order of Arts and Letters.&nbsp;
Her 2026 release&nbsp;Home&nbsp;explores themes of loss, identity, and belonging through a wide-ranging repertoire, offering a personal and expansive view of what “home” can mean.

The Colorado QuitLine offers up to $100 incentive to help adults across the state quit tobacco and nicotine products. The <a href="https://www.coloradoquits.com/" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">Colorado QuitLine</a>&nbsp;is offering Coloradans ages 18 and older the opportunity to earn up to $100 for completing a coaching series designed to help them quit tobacco and nicotine products for good. Research indicates that people who attempt to quit tobacco and nicotine products with support from programs like the free Colorado QuitLine are five times more likely to succeed than those who quit without support.&nbsp; Participants receive personalized coaching support and free nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), including patches, gum, and lozenges. Services are available online at <a href="http://coloradoquits.com/" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">ColoradoQuits.com</a>&nbsp;or by calling 1-800-QUIT-NOW. Online enrollment takes just a few minutes, and participants can receive coaching via chat or by phone. &ldquo;Quitting nicotine is hard, but people are far more likely to succeed when they have coaching and proven tools to support them,&rdquo; said Jill Hunsaker Ryan, executive director of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. &ldquo;The Colorado QuitLine provides free support to anyone using any form of tobacco or nicotine products, including cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, oral nicotine pouches, and smokeless tobacco.&rdquo; 
According to the <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1NcybOmCt3HA0Z5EPPrYAAmrsFV9EQBYReHWCMBk7TC4/edit?gid=0#gid=0" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">2024 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS)</a>, current smoking among Colorado adults is below 10% for the first time in the&nbsp;state&rsquo;s recorded history. However, the same survey shows that vaping rates have increased significantly since 2017, with use increasingly concentrated among 18 to 34-year-olds and among adults who were not smoking before they started vaping.
While quitting &ldquo;cold turkey&rdquo; has a success rate of just 4-7% according to the <a href="https://stacks.cdc.gov/view/cdc/6964" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention</a>, several research studies confirm that combining medication and behavioral support significantly increases quitting success rates.
To encourage engagement and completion of coaching support, adult participants can earn up to $100 for completing five phone-based coaching calls:
<li>$10 for call one.&nbsp;</li><li>$15 for call two.</li><li>$25 for call three.&nbsp;</li><li>$25 for call four.</li><li>$25 for call five.</li>QuitLine coaches are trained, non-judgmental professionals who provide confidential help with understanding cravings, triggers, and overcoming challenges and help create a personalized approach for quitting nicotine and tobacco.&nbsp;For youth ages 12-17, the <a href="http://www.mylifemyquit.org/" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">My Life, My Quit</a>&nbsp;program offers free and confidential support tailored specifically for teens in Colorado to quit nicotine and tobacco products.
