Jack London State Historic Park

On Saturdays from Sept. 5 to Oct. 3, Jack London State Historic Park’s WILD Trail Challenge returns for a third year.This series of five hikes covers every trail in the park for a total of 39.5 miles.The hikes increase in duration and/or difficulty each week.Participants can sign up for individual hikes or do them all.
The price for each hike is $15.The park entry fee of $15 per vehicle is waived for these hikes.Those who sign up for all five hikes before Sept. 5 save 20 percent and pay only $60.
Hike # 1 – Historic Trails
September 5, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. 
A great way to warm up. This hike explores the historic sites and trails of the park. Navigate both sides of the park to discover Jack London’s Beauty Ranch, London Lake, and the Wolf House ruins. 
Easy – moderate hike (approximately 4.5 miles roundtrip)
Hike # 2 – Ancient Redwood
September 12, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. 
Meander through the redwoods and sunny oak woodlands of the park’s three Bridge Trails (Upper, Lower, and Fallen). The journey leads to the majestic ancient redwood, fondly known as the Grandmother Tree.
Moderate hike (approximately 6 miles roundtrip)
Hike # 3 – Historic Orchard
September 19, 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. 
Start Location: Note that this hike does not begin at Jack London State Historic Park
Sonoma Developmental Center
Arnold Dr, Eldridge, CA 95431
Stroll along the blue shores of Fern Lake before reaching the Historic Orchard. Learn about the history of the land and the fascinating fruit-bearing crops that thrive there. 
Moderate – Difficult hike (approximately 7 miles roundtrip)
Hike # 4 – Ridge
September 26, 9 a.m-3:30 p.m. 
Details: Hikers will gain elevation and an appreciation for the diverse habitats found within the park. They’ll also traverse part of the ever-growing Bay Area Ridge Trail. 
Difficult hike (approximately 12 miles roundtrip)
Hike # 5 – Summit
October 3, 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. 
A trek to the park summit is the perfect way to complete the WILD Trail Challenges.Climb Sonoma Mountain to enjoy stunning views, celebrate with fellow hikers, and become a WILD One.

Jack London State Historic Park WILD Trail Challenge 

Presented in partnership with the Sonoma Community Center, participants will explore both watercolor technique and the core principles of landscape painting, including composition, color temperature, and atmospheric perspective. Artist Hannah Day will guide participtants to create movement and depth in a painting and gain a new appreciation for the beauty of the surroundings through the process of close observation and careful rendering.
The class begins with quick thumbnail sketches, then each person selects one composition to focus on throughout the day. Through demonstration and individual instruction, they learn color mixing and watercolor techniques while building their painting step by step.All levels of experience are welcome.

In recognition of Día de Muertos, Jack London State Historic Park will present two ofrendas
in the House of Happy Walls Museum from Oct. 4 to Nov. 6, 2026.
Dia de Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a tradition that began in Mexican and other Latino cultures.An ofrenda, Spanish for ‘offering,’ is an altar created to honor and welcome the memory of those who have died. 
The Legacy Ofrenda will honor writer and adventurer Jack London, Charmian London, and other individuals connected to the history of the property. Through photographs, reproductions, traditional elements of an ofrenda, and carefully selected symbolic objects, the installation will reflect Jack and Charmian's partnership, writing and travels, their life at Beauty Ranch, their connection to the land, and the legacies they left behind. 
The Community Ofrenda will be a shared, participatory offering. Visitors, locals, volunteers, Board members, and employees can contribute a small photograph, written name, memory, drawing or message honoring someone who has passed away – including a beloved pet.
The installation will grow throughout October as more people participate.Materials will be available at the display for visitors who would like to join the celebration and contribute a name, memory or even a drawing of their loved one.

Join historical ecologist Angela Nardo-Morgan for a look at the early history of what became the Sonoma Developmental Center, from its origins in the late 19th century to its closure.
Presented in partnership with the Glen Ellen Historical Society, the program will explore the founding of the institution at Eldridge in 1891, its development and changing philosophies of care, and the important role it played in shaping the surrounding Glen Ellen community. The program will also consider the broader history of the area during the lifetimes of Jack and Charmian London, including the institution’s proximity to London’s Beauty Ranch.
Note: This program focuses on the historical period of the Sonoma Development Center up until its closure and does not cover current redevelopment plans or discussions.

Slow down and take a close-up look at the beautiful trees of Jack London State Park. Explore the details found up close—bark, moss, knots, cracks, textures, patterns, and the subtle variations in color and light that make each tree unique.
Students will spend time observing and drawing aspects of the trees around them while learning and practicing foundational observational drawing skills, including proportion, shape, line, texture, and composition. 
Discover the meditative benefits of a plein air art practice while spending meaningful time in nature and gaining a deeper appreciation for the beauty, complexity, and individuality of the trees all around. All levels of experience are welcome.

Plein Air Trees Up Close: A Day at Jack London Park

Long before plastic decorations and store-bought costumes, Halloween celebrations were filled with handmade decorations, paper crafts, games, and a little bit of mischief. Halloween parties were often intimate gatherings filled with creative touches made by hand.
Inspired by the traditions of Jack and Charmian London’s era, guests will spend the evening creating their own festive Halloween crafts using period-inspired designs and materials. From spooky paper decorations to vintage-inspired keepsakes, participants will have the opportunity to embrace their creativity and take their handmade creations home.
All materials will be provided, and light refreshments will be available.This hands-on workshop is designed with adults in mind and isn’t suitable for young children.

Migrations have been integral to wild and human lives on Oona-pa’is for millennia. Following favorable climate, familial ties, and food availability is necessary to a community’s survival and healthy diversity.
In mid to late October, species of birds who have summered elsewhere arrive to forage the mountain’s forests and stream corridors. Varied and hermit thrushes, fox sparrows, and Townsend’s warblers are among the fall visitors and returning residents to Oona-pa’is.
Join Rebecca Lawton, long-time guide, author, and scientist, for a bird walk on Oona-pa’is (Sonoma Mountain).
Spend the morning looking and listening for new avian arrivals, like the Townsend’s warbler (pictured). Keeping a list for submittal to eBird, adding group sightings to databases used by scientists who research the mysteries of migrations, the group will explore how valuable migrants are to local ecosystems and neighborhoods.
This will be a relaxed, slow-paced walk suitable for ages 12 and up. The total distance will depend on the bird activity encountered, but plan for approximately 1–3 miles round trip.

Los Colores de Otoño (The Colors of Autumn) is a community day in Spanish for the whole family to enjoy nature, art, culture, and the season together.
Come in costume and spend the day surrounded by papel picado, Mexican food, art and crafts inspired by Halloween and Día de los Muertos, and opportunities to get an up-close look at the region’s wildlife. There will be activities for kids and adults, community organizations sharing resources, and a collection of animal skulls and pelts to explore. And everyone who comes in costume gets candy!
Whether with family, friends, a partner, or on your own, this will be a day to connect, create, and celebrate the colors and traditions that make this time of year so special.
