Join historian Brooke Barbier for a lively talk about the influence of tavern and drinking culture on the American Revolution. Eighteenth-century Americans consumed a staggering amount of alcohol compared to us today. Drink influenced their politics, built and sustained their relationships, and drove the economy. Booze was not a small part of colonial society, nor covertly consumed in private spaces—it was integral to American life. When the colonists rebelled against the British Empire, this culture of drink and taverns helped foster revolution. Copies of Barbier's latest book will be available for purchase and signing, and samples of First Shot Rum will be served!

When the Battle of Lexington was fought in 1775, Hancock Street was a country lane with just two houses. The next 150 years saw many houses built with various architectural styles, including Georgian, Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, and Gothic Revival homes that populate the street today. Lexington has heroes in every century, and the Leading Lexingtonians series celebrates those who have shaped the town through their work, passions, and community contributions. Join us to honor legendary jazz drummer, percussionist, and teacher <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Dawson" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Alan Dawson</a>, whose career included performances with Quincy Jones, Clifford Brown, Dexter Gordon, and Dave Brubeck, as well as teaching generations of musicians at <a href="https://www.berklee.edu/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Berklee</a> and beyond. Enjoy live music from Chris Neville, Ron Mahdi, and John Ramsay, followed by a celebration of Dawson’s legacy with his daughter Deborah Mullins and former student Mike Powers; cosponsored by the <a href="https://www.abclex.org/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Association of Black Citizens of Lexington (ABCL)</a>.

From skulls and crossbones, to willow trees and urns, this is the perfect place to see the history of how our ancestors grappled with the concept of death through beautiful artwork. Discover how mortuary art has changed over time here, and meet some of Lexington's most famous inhabitants along the way.
