The Farmington Community Band was founded in 1966 by two music educators, Paul and Fern Barber, who had the idea of providing an opportunity for adult musicians to continue their musical education beyond school and at the same time entertain audiences in the Farmington community. Today, the FCB music organization is comprised of over 100 people participating in several instrumental music groups including an 85+ member concert band, under the direction of Damien Crutcher, a 20 piece big band style ensemble, a dixieland band, flute and brass ensembles and a clarinet choir. These fine groups will perform a wide variety of music at several venues in and around the Farmington area during the concert season. Membership is open to all adults and qualified high school students may audition. The FCB is offered as an instrumental music course at Oakland Community College - Orchard Ridge Campus.
FCB members are dedicated musicians of a wide range of ages and backgrounds who simply share in the joy of performing fine music. In that spirit, there is no admission fee for any concert sponsored by the FCB. With the enthusiasm of our members, and support from donors, the FCB will continue to reach out to audiences with music for everyone. From kids in their schools, to formal concerts, to dinner dances, band festivals and seniors in nursing homes, it is their wish to extend a musical greeting to everyone who enjoys fine music. The FCB is dedicated to a lifetime of music education, proud to be a member of the greater Detroit music community.
