The Riverside Church In The City Of New York

We are convening in this historic space to spark actionable solutions. FREE EVENT/FREE REGISTRATION
Our explicit objective is to move beyond highlighting statistics and focus heavily on systemic and actionable strategies. To guide our panelists, we have compiled the following six core pillars:
1.Dismantling the Historic and Systemic Barriers: Devising effective and actionable programs, tactics and community efforts to combat, dismantle, and/or neutralize barriers and systems inhibiting progress and justice for blacks in general, and black males in particular.
2.Dismantling the School-to-Prison Pipeline: Developing concrete strategies to help improve school performance, and also to disrupt punitive educational systems and reduce the justice gap that leaves Black youth nearly six times more likely to be incarcerated than their white peers.
3.Economic Empowerment:
Exploring innovative pathways for workforce development to counteract volatile youth unemployment rates.
4.Mental Health & Healing:
Fostering tailored healing circles and support systems to address the unique traumas driving mental health crisis among young Black men.
5.Strengthening Family & Fatherhood:
Building support systems that cultivate family formation while actively debunking harmful stereotypes about Black fathers.
6.Navigating Policy Shifts:
Analyzing what the erosion of civil rights protections under the Trump administration means for Black youth, and sharing strategic frameworks to minimize these adverse impacts.

The Jay Heritage Center (JHC) is a dynamic nonprofit which manages the Jay Estate in Rye, New York. The 23-acre park that they have preserved and interpreted since 1992 is an award-winning culture hub and wildlife refuge on Long Island Sound. Located in the heart of Westchester’s only National Historic Landmark District, the site welcomes visitors April through November to learn about our nation’s flawed yet precious democracy through indoor and outdoor public programs. Offerings about American History feature prominent writers and educators. Free horticulture and birding workshops teach guests about native plants and wildlife. Family-friendly concerts draw hundreds for old-fashioned fun and unplugged enjoyment. The site is a member of NY State's Path Through History and Westchester County's African American Heritage Trail. Church of the Heavenly Rest

Don't miss this unique and wonderful operatic work first performed 100 years ago and recently rediscovered. In honor of the 800th anniversary of St. Francis, patron saint of animals, nature and peace, Canterbury Choral Society will perform the Oratorio this Sunday October 25th with professional soloists, chorus and full orchestra. One performance only! Popular Tenor Blake Friedman sings the part of St. Francis.
In 1916 The American Press described the work as "sublime, with passages of extraordinary beauty". Canterbury conductor Jonathan De Vries confirmed "This is a beautiful work in the Italian operatic tradition, very lyrical, with moving arias and choral interludes." First performed in October 1916 by the Metropolitan Opera at Carnegie Hall, the Oratorio was lost until 2006. Tickets are $35, booked in advance through Eventbrite.com or $40 cash at the door. For more information about this unique work and the story of how it was rediscovered go to www.canterburychoral.org.

The week before the 2026 midterm elections, join us for a concert that asks a simple but urgent question:
What does resistance sound like?
Written in response to the rise of fascism in Europe and the events that led to Kristallnacht, Sir. Michael Tippett’s A Child of Our Time was a powerful act of protest. Nearly 90 years later, its message still hits home.
Filled with gripping spirituals such as Steal Away, Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen, and Deep River, A Child of Our Time transforms grief into action and despair into hope. Tippet’s compositions begin in darkness but ends with renewal, reminding us that even in difficult times, a better future is worth fighting for.
Presented in partnership with the Mannes School of Music
New York Choral Society: A Child of Our Time
Soloists Laquita Mitchell, Soprano Margaret Lattimore, Mezzo-Soprano William Burden, Tenor Stephen Powell, Baritone
