 on recognizing and responding to harmful traditional practices that 
exert control over others, with Sasha K. Taylor, visiting lecturer at 
Ohio State University’s Global Fellowship Program and advisor and 
trainer in honor violence prevention.
People claiming to enforce traditional honor codes are responsible 
for a significant share of murders and other violent or abusive acts 
within immigrant and refugee communities. Honor-based violence and abuse
 often play a role in human trafficking, forced marriage, child 
marriage, visa-based coercion, and in the abandonment of families across
 international borders. Yet too often it is underreported, 
misunderstood, or overlooked by people and institutions with the power 
to help its victims.
Learn how to spot and deal with honor-based violence with Sasha K. 
Taylor, a former FBI Intelligence official who provides training to law 
enforcement, non-profit organizations, and private companies and also is
 extensively involved with regional organizations that combat human 
trafficking.
She’ll start by discussing how honor codes that have governed 
community life since the dawn of human civilization gave rise to the use
 of honor-related abuse, oppression, shame, and violence to exert 
control and perpetuate inequality. Although boys and men can be victims 
of honor-based violence, the perpetrators of it are predominantly male 
and the survivors predominantly female, lending support to the idea that
 honor violence is a form of gender-based violence. The forms that such 
violence can take include genital mutilation and honor killings.
She’ll discuss state and federal data related to the prevalence of 
various forms of honor violence and describe how complex forms of abuse 
are often underreported, misunderstood, or overlooked. You’ll learn 
about cultural and systemic barriers to disclosure, warning signs and 
risk factors, the intersection of immigration vulnerabilities and abuse,
 and the challenges that survivors face when seeking protection and 
services.
We’ll also look at policy responses to honor violence and how gaps 
within current federal immigration frameworks may unintentionally 
contribute to vulnerability and exploitation.
Her talk will be especially helpful for first responders, victim 
advocates, educators, healthcare professionals, social workers, and law 
enforcement personnel who are often the first point of contact during a 
crisis. She’ll emphasize trauma-informed engagement, emotional 
intelligence, cultural competency, and empathetic response strategies

unconstitutional and unchecked assertions of power, with Scott 
Michelman, legal director of ACLU-D.C. and lecturer on law and Shikes 
Fellow in Civil Liberties and Civil Rights at Harvard Law School.
The Trump administration has encouraged Immigration and Customs 
Enforcement members and other federal agents to commit horrifying abuses
 based on claims that they have “absolute immunity.” The results have 
been devastating. Renee Good, Alex Pretti, Ruben Ray Martinez, and Keith
 Porter Jr. are all dead at the hands of federal agents, and countless 
more have been subjected to needless violence and trauma.&nbsp;&nbsp;
A recent ACLU and YouGov poll showed that 93 percent of 
voters—including 89 percent of Trump voters—believe that federal agents 
should not be above the law. What many Americans don’t know is just how 
difficult it can be to hold federal officers accountable when they 
violate constitutional rights.
Join Scott Michelman, legal scholar and ACLU-D.C. legal director, for
 a deep dive into why it’s so difficult for most ordinary people to seek
 justice from federal agents and what can be done about it.&nbsp;
He’ll discuss legal precedents that limit the ability of ordinary 
people to seek justice. Although the Supreme Court had held for most of 
the past half-century that federal officers should be suable just like 
their state counterparts, it reversed course in a series of cases over 
the last 10 years, declaring in 2017 that permitting suits against 
federal officers was a “disfavored judicial activity” that courts should
 almost never allow because Congress has not specifically provided for 
such suits.
You’ll learn about the ramifications of an alarming accountability 
gap between federal and state officers. For example, after Minneapolis 
Police Officer Derek Chauvin murdered George Floyd in 2020, Mr. Floyd’s 
family sued the City of Minneapolis and police officers for violating 
his constitutional rights and secured a $27 million settlement. Federal 
law, however, does not allow the families of Alex Pretti and Renee Good 
to file that type of lawsuit against the federal agents who shot and 
killed them just miles from where Mr. Floyd was murdered.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
You’ll learn how federal and local lawmakers can fix this problem. 
Potential federal remedies include reform bills pending in Congress 
right now, such as the Constitutional Accountability Act. At the local 
level, the District of Columbia could pass a law authorizing federal 
officer suits for constitutional violations.&nbsp;
Finally, we'll talk about what people in D.C. and across the country

Frenchman, with Richard Bell, professor of history at the University of

When the Marquis de Lafayette returned to the United States in 1824, 
Americans greeted him with a frenzy of affection unmatched by anything 
the nation had ever shown a single individual. Crowds filled streets, 
towns held ceremonies in his honor, Congress showered him with gifts, 
and parents named children for the French aristocrat who had helped win 
the American Revolution.
Explore the extraordinary life behind that adulation with historian 
Richard Bell, whose excellent past talks have earned him a big following
 among Profs and Pints fans.
Professor Bell will take Lafayette far beyond his familiar role as George Washington’s young protégé and the hero of Yorktown.
You’ll learn how Lafayette became one of the Atlantic world’s most 
persistent champions of liberty—fighting for constitutional government, 
religious freedom, prison reform, press freedom, antislavery, and 
independence movements from Greece to Poland.&nbsp;

Brunsman, chairman of George Washington University’s history department,
 lecturer at Mount Vernon, and noted scholar of early American history 
and the American Revolution.
The celebration of our nation’s 250th anniversary will take on much 
deeper meaning if you take time to fully understand and appreciate the 
document that declared our independence from England and gave rise to 
the American experiment.
Learn essential lessons about the Declaration of Independence from 
Denver Brunsman, an incredibly engaging speaker who has built a big 
following among Profs and Pints fans in and around Washington D.C.
Professor Brunsman will start by discussing the Declaration’s background, composition, and philosophical underpinnings.&nbsp;&nbsp;
You’ll learn how by 1776 American colonists had resisted British 
policies for thirteen years and endured open warfare with Britain for 
more than a year. We’ll look at how this imperial crisis influenced the 
Declaration’s primary author, Thomas Jefferson, as well as the larger 
Declaration Committee and the Second Continental Congress.
In recent years, scholars have focused particularly on the previously
 underappreciated grievance section of the Declaration. Rather than 
simply being an afterthought to the more famous preamble (“all men are 
created equal”), the grievances followed a logical order that carefully 
presented the case against King George III and the British Empire for a 
“candid world” to consider. Professor Brunsman will fill you in on how 
that list of grievances rallied Americans and other nations to the 
cause.
A document both timeless and of its time, the Declaration quickly 
soared beyond its humble origins as a committee report to become 
synonymous with American independence and an inspiration for rebellion 
elsewhere. Dr. Brunsman will consider the place of the Declaration in 
American life, from the eighteenth century to today, and how the 
document helped shape much of American history while influencing “the 
course of human events” throughout the world.&nbsp;

Who wants to learn about owls?
If you are fascinated by these hunters of the night, you’ll love 
spending an evening with Steve Sheffield, a biologist who extensively 
studies owls and works to conserve them.
He’ll start by covering the different types of owls in our region and
 elsewhere, and the ways in which their bodies and their sizes represent
 physical adaptations to their environment. He’ll especially focus on 
the owl species of the United States and Canada, describing their 
biology, ranges, preferred habitat and prey, behavior, and 
vocalizations.&nbsp;
You’ll learn how and why field biologists study owls and how owl 
researchers from around the world assemble periodically to discuss their
 work. We’ll consider owls' value to ecosystems and, especially, humans 
and human-dominated landscapes where they serve as especially efficient 
killers of rodents and other crop-harming pests.
Dr. Sheffield will talk about the many years he has spent researching
 owls, with much of his work focused on their exposure to environmental 
contaminants and how they’re affected.&nbsp;
Being top predators, owls serve as sensitive bioindicators of 
contamination throughout the food chain. Much like canaries in coal 
mines, they function as an early warning system alerting us to 
potentially dangerous levels of toxicity. We don’t just study them for

Be careful out there. According to Slavic folklore, in the late 
spring the rusalki, an East Slavic version of mermaids, emerge from 
lakes and streams to water crops and to claim lives. They're mostly 
beautiful, with wild hair and blazing eyes, and they’re more than happy 
to drag smitten young men to watery graves.
Join Philippa Rappoport, an expert on Slavic folklore and rituals, 
for a discussion of the water spirits of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia and
 the traditions centered around them. She'll describe how rusalki were 
both revered and feared by people who would sing songs in their honor 
while carrying protective charms.&nbsp;
You'll learn how East Slavic mermaid lore permeated wedding rituals 
and parades, inspired the construction of effigies, and reflected 
beliefs about women that, throughout the world, have translated into a 
lot of concern over how women wear their hair and cover their heads.
Philippa has wowed crowds with fascinating talks on East Slavic 
nature spirits and folktales related to the underworld and winter. Her

 on word of saviors in religion and science fiction, with Peter Herman, 
former lecturer in theology and religious studies at Marymount 
University and scholar of religious and social themes in sci fi.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Dune: Part Three is scheduled for release in December, and trailers for the epic space opera film have fans of the Dune
 franchise longing for it like visitors to its desert planet Arrakis 
long for water. Based on the second volume of renowned science fiction 
novelist Frank Herbert's Dune saga, the movie depicts the 
internal and external conflicts of protagonist Paul Atreides, an emperor
 treated by others as a messiah while being depicted as an antihero.
The film will raise intriguing questions related to the presence of 
redeeming figures, or messiahs, throughout both science fiction and 
religious texts. Among them: What exactly do we mean by the term 
“messiah”? Why have many religious traditions looked for a redeemer to 
emerge? What happens if the messiah gets it all wrong?&nbsp;
Explore such questions—and prepare yourself to enjoy the upcoming Dune
 film at a much deeper level—with Dr. Peter Herman, who has given 
several excellent, thought-provoking Profs and Pints talks on the Dune franchise.
To center Dune in the discussion, we’ll look at the 
character of Paul Atriedes as a ruler who has launched a jihad across 
known space to reconquer it. His prescient visions show him that 
although the spread of religious war is not optimal, neither is it the 
worst potential future for humanity, and he allows excess and violence 
to continue in his name out of a conviction that it’s for the greater 
good. Throughout the book on which the upcoming film is based, Atriedes 
struggles with his followers' desire to view him as a divine figure.
Dr. Herman, a trained theologian, will set such themes in the broader
 context of religious studies by discussing messianic figures across 
various religious traditions. Among them, Christianity names Jesus of 
Nazareth as the messiah, but he is hardly the first person in the 
canonical Bible given that title. Mainstream Judaism does not anticipate
 any similar, deified figure descending from heaven, but messianic 
strains of Judaism have looked for the arrival of a political liberator.
 Islam, from which Frank Herbert borrowed terms applied to Paul 
Atriedes, contains reference to someone serving not as a redeemer but as
 a heavenly guide. All branches of Buddhism situate within each new age 
of their cyclical cosmology a Buddha-yet-to-come.
We’ll look at the human tendency in confusing times to seek out 
direct, uncomplicated answers and to embrace messianism as part of 
apocalypticism, which foretells a straightforward sorting process in 
which believers, as good people, see reward while their enemies, as bad 
people, see punishment.&nbsp;

Festival Celebrating America’s 250th Anniversary National Archives Building Constitution Avenue | Washington, DC June 4-6, 2026 You're invited to the <a href="https://archivesfoundation.org/spirit-of-independence-festival/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Spirit of Independence Festival</a>, a three-day immersive celebration of American history, culture, and community at the National Archives—the home of the original Declaration of Independence—in the heart of Washington, DC.&nbsp; Hosted beneath a tent spanning two city blocks in front of the National Archives, the Spirit of Independence Festival will include free daytime events for families and three evening benefit events to support the National Archives Foundation and its effort to engage the American public with the nation’s history.&nbsp; From free daytime programming like a patriotic pet “yappy hour” to ticketed nighttime events like a culinary “taste of America,” there’s something for everyone to enjoy throughout the multi-day festival. Join us for an unforgettable evening as the National Chamber Ensemble brings its 2025–2026 season to a joyful and inspiring close with Mozart and Bruch: The Great Concertos.
This special finale blends the power of great masterpieces with the warmth and intimacy of chamber music, offering a fresh and deeply moving way to experience some of the most beloved works ever written. 
Internationally acclaimed pianist Carlos César Rodríguez joins NCE for Mozart’s radiant Piano Concerto No. 21 “Elvira Madigan,” overflowing with elegance, lyricism, and pure musical joy. Artistic Director and violinist Leo Sushansky takes center stage in Bruch’s passionate Violin Concerto No. 1, bringing heartfelt intensity and sweeping romance to one of the violin world’s greatest treasures.
Adding even more beauty to the evening are Adoration by American composer Florence Price, glowing with warmth and serenity, and Romance by Johan Svendsen, beloved for its graceful lyricism and charm. 
This season finale celebrates the enduring brilliance of classical music’s great composers while showcasing the artistry and interpretive depth of NCE’s distinguished musicians: Najin Kim (violin), Kelly Cho (violin), Uri Wassertzug(viola), Vasily Popov (cello), alongside Rodríguez and Sushansky.

Free Classical Concert with World-Renowned Musicians 

Nathan’s Cancer Slayers, a local Arlington fundraising team under Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, invites the community to Cocktails for a Cause — An Amalfi Coast Evening on Sunday, June 14 in Georgetown. ✨🍸
This inaugural silent auction will bring together friends, neighbors, and community supporters for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and a fun silent auction — all raising funds for childhood cancer research in honor of Nathan Fleming, an Arlington student who passed away from rhabdomyosarcoma in 2019, just one week after turning 18.
Nathan was an Arlington student and alum of Jamestown Elementary, Swanson Middle School, and Washington-Liberty High School. His mom, Michele Fleming, formed Nathan’s Cancer Slayers under Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation in 2020, and the team has raised more than $775,000 to advance childhood cancer research.
This year’s auction will support promising research led by Dr. Valter Longo at USC and Dr. JinSeok Park at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, with the goal of moving this work toward clinical trials for children within the next 2-3 years.
Guests can attend the event in person, browse and bid online from anywhere, or make a donation directly. Auction items include luxury getaways, VIP experiences, local packages, handcrafted items, and more.
Every ticket, donation, and auction bid will be matched 1:1 by Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation up to $30,000, doubling the impact of community support.&nbsp;💪
