Rhythmix Cultural Works

Artists of the African Diaspora @ K Gallery/Rhythmix Cultural Works features artists from various backgrounds including Nigerian American Victoria Bankole, Trinidad native, Stacy Mootoo and Panama native, Xioneida Ruiz. This exhibit’s eclectic mix of diasporic cultures and techniques embodies the very essence of Art of the African Diaspora’s mission and program.
In this satellite exhibit, viewers can experience a taste of various mediums and techniques presented by 9 local artists: Eric Murphy (Curator), Victoria Bankole, Stacy Mootoo, Xioneida Ruiz, TheArthur Wright, Chamia LaRae, Malcolm Ryder, Joanne Johnson, and Val Kai.
Stacy Mootoo’s paper quilted sculptural work consists of intricate single line by line multi-color paper cut motifs in the background forming the Pan African colors beyond iconic black figures like Malcolm X. TheArthur Wright presents an invented medium of bleach on black paper in pointillism style. Chamia LaRae and curator, Eric Murphy, present work in mixed media, while Xioneida Ruiz offers beautiful paintings, and Victoria Bankole, Val Kai, and Malcolm Ryder contribute their expertise in photography.

Artists of the African Diaspora – Closing Reception & Artists Talk

Artists have always been at the center of the nation’s soul. They’ve told the truth when no one else would: of broken dreams and second chances; of ordinary people holding on to dignity in hard times; and, how to hold onto purpose when circumstances seem bleak. Artists are the catalysts with the power to move hearts, open eyes, and expand our potential to realize and continue to believe in what is possible.
On July 4, 2026, America will stand before the world. Beyond the fireworks, will we see the country collapsing under the pressure of growing authoritarianism that is intentionally fueling division and resentment — or — a democratic republic renewed with courage and optimism?
O Say Can You See … the Soul of Our Nation showcases art that creates a future together that’s worthy of our hopes and dreams. This exhibit features artwork from local Bay Area artists that embody and envision their aspirations for the future of our country and its peoples, (re)imaging what we can be.
O Say Can You See … the Soul of Our Nation is co-produced by Citizen Joy, curated by Barbara Kibbe (Citizen Joy Leader) and juried by Jeff Raz (Citizen Joy Founder).

This year’s event features a dynamic lineup of world-class performers, headlined by the electrifying Maze Daiko, an Alameda-based ensemble known for blending Japanese taiko with global rhythms—from African marimba and djembe to Persian santur and Brazilian percussion. Their powerful, genre-defying sound has earned them recognition as true pioneers of contemporary taiko.
You’ll also experience the vibrant sounds of AZA, whose music fuses traditional North African Tamazight styles with global influences. With rich rhythms, intricate melodies, and soulful vocals, AZA delivers performances that are as visually captivating as they are musically compelling.

String &amp; Shadow Puppet Theater returns this summer with a brand-new production, Night at the Grand Opera! Set in an old European opera house during the golden age of Grand Opera, Night at the Grand Opera is a frenzied romp through a candlelit night at the Opera. Rococo extravagance is fashioned with elaborate cardboard sets that collapse and unfold to reveal the many great dramas of the opera house (not all of which happen on stage.). Love triangles, converging revolutionary plots, art-loving flies and disaffected vermin are brought to life with cardboard and papier-mache.
