America’s 250th anniversary brings a sense of pride and an opportunity for reflection. Join fashion historian Bonnie Hansen as she shares authentic bicentennial and sesquicentennial-era clothing and souvenirs from her personal collection. We will look back at fashion, home furnishing trends, locomotives, fire hydrants, and beyond as we explore fun and quirky celebrations of our nation’s birthday in days past. Guests are encouraged to participate by bringing any bicentennial souvenirs you may have stashed in your personal collection.
About Our Speaker Bonnie Hansen is a fashion historian who has worked as a Hollywood costumer, museum consultant, and lecturer on women’s history and fashion history. She has worked with notable organizations such as Titanic – The Exhibition, the New Mexico History Museum, and California State Historic Parks. Through her presentation, we’ll share some star-spangled stories and centennial milestone memories.
About the Brechner Series The History Center’s Brechner Speaker Series honors the late Joseph L. Brechner, a longtime journalist, community leader, and television pioneer who is also remembered as one of Orlando’s first clear public voices for civil rights. The son of Eastern European immigrants, Brechner believed deeply in American democracy and citizens’ responsibilities to be informed and participate. The museum’s research center, home to the archival collection of the Historical Society of Central Florida, also bears Brechner’s name.

Brechner Speaker Series – In Patriotic Fashion: The Fun and Quirky Side of Centennial Celebrations

Long days, sandy beaches, and splish-splashing in the water make summer a great time to throw a soiree with your family and friends! Step into a sensory-friendly experience the whole family can enjoy as you celebrate the beginnings of summer and Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander month. Learn about the blending of cultures here in Central Florida and beat the summer heat with a day of indoor family-friendly fun! Admission is free for this event.
During Sensory Sundays, we aim to provide a welcoming and comfortable experience for guests with autism spectrum disorder and sensory-processing sensitivity. To do this we have adopted some basic accommodations, including access to a social narrative to help plan your visit, lowered or muted audio in exhibits, and limited use of flashing or moving lights. We also provide access to noise-reducing earmuffs, fidget/sensory toys, and a quiet space to utilize during your visit. Additionally, the History Center has created a variety of sensory-friendly activities available throughout the museum to engage a wide variety of guests with hands-on history learning.
