Childhood Trauma & Juvenile Justice is a new solo play that explores how childhood trauma and a lack of support can send people down dramatically different life trajectories.
This free one-time only live theatrical event will have its world premiere on Friday, November 13; 3 p.m. at UCLA’s Lani Hall. Performed, written, and directed, by Dr. Micah E. Johnson, an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine and a SAG-AFTRA actor who uses plays and performances to disseminate research, information, and behavioral health resources to the community.
Dr. Johnson portrays multiple characters and alternative versions of a life shaped by different combinations of risk and protective factors. This creative and educational production examines how childhood trauma can affect mental health, substance use, and involvement in the justice system and explores the criminalization of mental illness and the poverty-to-prison pipeline.
Combining scientific research, storytelling, drama, humor, and lived experience, Childhood Trauma & Juvenile Justice asks audiences to consider not only individual choices, but how families, communities, institutions, opportunities, and systems shape those choices.
Designed particularly for youth, families, mentors, educators, social workers, community leaders, organizations, and anyone affected by trauma and juvenile justice, Childhood Trauma & Juvenile Justice represents an unusual intersection of academic research, medicine, social science, theatre, and community engagement. The performance translates research on childhood trauma, behavioral health, violence, and juvenile justice into an accessible theatrical experience.
The performance is intentionally free to the public, and attendees will receive free books and behavioral-health resources available to attendees. UCLA Family Medicine is utilizing a live theatrical production to reach audiences that might never attend a scientific conference or read an academic journal.WHEN: Friday, November 13 at 3 p.m.

The City of Pasadena invites everyone to join CicLAvia—Pasadena on Sunday, November 15, from 9am to 3pm, in partnership with the nonprofit CicLAvia and funded in part by Metro. The event will temporarily convert sections of our city streets into vibrant, car-free zones for community enjoyment, walking, biking, rolling, and gathering.
CicLAvia
is a nonprofit organization that has been opening streets throughout Los Angeles County for 16 years. It transforms city streets into a car-free celebration of community, connection, and possibility — places where participants can slow down, connect, and appreciate the city in a new way. CicLAvia is about reimagining our city streets as welcoming spaces for everyone — places for walking, running, rolling, skating, cycling, gathering, and enjoying the moment.
The 2.7-mile CicLAvia route includes Colorado Boulevard (Pasadena Avenue to Allen Avenue) and Raymond Avenue (Pacific Alley to Dayton St), forming a seamless corridor through Old Pasadena, Playhouse Village, South Lake Avenue, and connecting Metro’s Memorial Park and Del Mar Stations. Cars will be permitted to cross at six (6) key intersections across the CicLAvia route. Two (2) activity hubs with community programming, services, and activities are located at Memorial Park and at Colorado Boulevard and Allen Avenue. Hubs offer free family-friendly activities, restrooms, free water refilling stations, free basic bike repair, bike parking, places to sit and meet up with friends and family, and first aid. Free pedicab rides are available at each hub’s information booth
To provide further connections to the CicLAvia route, the City is temporarily setting up dedicated ‘pop-up’ bike lanes, known as ‘Slow Streets’, with traffic cones and signage to separate bikes and wheeled devices from normal operating street traffic. A 1.0-mile western Slow Streets segment will run along Walnut Avenue between Raymond Avenue and Orange Grove Boulevard and then continue to Rosemont Avenue a few blocks from the Rose Bowl. Additionally, a 1.0-mile segment along Colorado Boulevard from Allen Avenue to San Gabriel Boulevard will connect East Colorado Boulevard to the Lamanda Park neighborhood.
Streets along the CicLAvia route will close to cars from 7am to 5pm. on Sunday, November 15, with no parking allowed along the route beginning at 4am. Cars on the Slow Street routes will be allowed, and parking will be temporarily restricted similar to the CicLAvia route (4am to 5pm). No parking signs will be posted in advance and towing will be enforced. A virtual community meeting will be held Thursday, October 15, at 5:30pm via Zoom at bit.ly/ciclavia_pasadena_CM. Attendees will learn about route details, programming, closures, business opportunities, and volunteer roles. Spanish translation will be provided.

Casa Youth Shelter

What does homelessness look like when you're 14, 15, or 16 years old? It doesn't always mean sleeping on the streets. Sometimes it means moving from couch to couch, sleeping in a family car, or staying in an unsafe home because there's nowhere else to go.
On Saturday, November 21, Casa Youth Shelter invites the community to experience these realities firsthand at A Walk in Their Shoes, a free, interactive awareness event hosted by high school students from Casa Youth Shelter's Youth Leadership Program in recognition of National Runaway Prevention Month, also known as HOPE Month.
Through immersive exhibits, youth-led storytelling, and interactive experiences, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by young people experiencing homelessness, housing instability, and family crisis.
"Kids are incredibly resourceful and resilient, so when they find themselves without a safe place to sleep, the people around them may not even realize it," said Lupita Gutierrez, Executive Director of Casa Youth Shelter. "That's why it's so important to bring awareness to an issue that often goes unnoticed. We want people to recognize the signs sooner and know how to help."
At the heart of the event are local high school students using their voices and leadership to bring attention to an issue affecting their peers. Members of Casa Youth Shelter's Youth Leadership Program will help bring realistic scenarios to life, including couch surfing, living in vehicles, and navigating unsafe home environments.
Attendees will also have opportunities to connect with community organizations, participate in hands-on activities, and reflect on what they have learned alongside Casa Youth Shelter's clinical team.
Beyond raising awareness, the event aims to challenge misconceptions about youth homelessness and encourage community members to play a role in prevention and early intervention.
"We want people to leave recognizing that these are kids in our own communities," Gutierrez added. "They may be sitting next to your child in class or working at your neighborhood grocery store. The fact that we don't see what they're going through doesn't mean it isn't happening."
