Raymond Farm Center for Living Arts & Design

This workshop will be led by Ananda Connolly, who will guide participants through the basics of relief printing, with special attention to materials, tool selection and use, for hand printing in particular. All materials will be provided, including shina wood blocks, water based inks, and Japanese wood cutting tools and papers. Inspiration for image design can be drawn from the Raymond Farm itself, but participants are equally encouraged to use their own memories, drawings, and photographs.
Guests do not need any previous experience in printmaking to enjoy this process, all levels of experience are welcome. During the workshop, each guest will design and draw an image, transfer the image to the wood block and carve their design to create their printing surface. After carving their block, each participant will print their own miniature edition. And, of course, you may take your artwork and carving tools home with you at the end of the workshop!

Discover the art of natural dyeing through itajime-zome, a traditional Japanese resist-dyeing technique that creates striking geometric and repeating patterns. Using time-honored natural dyes such as aizome (indigo), kakishibu (fermented persimmon tannin), and bengala (earth and iron oxide pigments), you'll explore the beauty and subtle variations these materials produce. Each participant will dye a cotton tenugui (Japanese cloth), creating a one-of-a-kind textile in rich, muted earth tones to take home. No prior experience is needed.
Participants will be able to dye two tenugui cloths and have an opportunity to bring one additional item from home to dye.

Historically, design duos, like Charles and Ray Eames pioneered mid-century modern living, while Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin brought a visionary organic approach to international city planning. Antonin and Noémi Raymond seamlessly blended Western modernism with Japanese craft, just as the iconic Finnish practice of Alvar Aalto relied on his deep, consecutive partnerships with Aino and Elissa Aalto. And Denise Scott Brown and Robert Venturi fundamentally altered urban theory and how architecture functions symbolically and socially. While history has often unfairly credited the male partners alone, these relationships reveal deeply integrated ways of working in which philosophy and execution were entirely shared, proving that our most enduring creative achievements come from a union of minds.&nbsp;This Symposium will celebrate the creative process in a day of presentations and lectures on historic and contemporary collaborations between couples (husband &amp; wife, and others) in the arts, design, and architecture. Special emphasis will be on the women’s essential roles in design, research, and leadership roles, which have often been overshadowed in past and even current histories. Artists and scholars will share presentations, followed by a Q&amp;A Panel Discussion.
