A veteran of the industry, Jack Schnur spent 30 years as a videotape editor for CBS. He now brings his decades of expertise to local libraries, where he is a well-known lecturer on the history of entertainment.

Author Event with Mr. Z: Thugs to Riches-From Halfway Gangster to Big-Shot Businessman at GN Library

Come share the journey of America's 250-year legacy. We’re hosting a special film screening and talk with expert historian and filmmaker Greg Blank. The lecture will highlight the representation of immigrants in early Hollywood cinema and the evolution of the portrayal of immigrant characters in more recent films and explore the ways in which immigrant stories are used to address larger social, political, and cultural issues. We’ll look at movies that detail the immigrant experience, such as The Godfather, Part II (1974); America America (1963); Avalon (1990); films from the early silent days, such as Charlie Chaplin’s The Immigrant (1917); to more recent films like Brooklyn (2015) and Minari (2020); as well as comical or allegorical commentary on the immigrant experience, like Coming to America (1988) and Alien Nation (1988). The presentation concludes with a discussion of the importance of accurate and nuanced representation of immigrant experiences in movies and the impact that these representations can have on shaping public perception and understanding of immigration.

Greg Blank has over 15 years of experience as a producer, director, cinematographer and editor. He has been lecturing on film and media studies and other topics since 2018. Greg is an award-winning producer for the show Push Pause Long Island on Verizon Fios1, and as a documentarian for the films Undocumented (2016), and A World Within a World: The Bay Houses of Long Island (2020). He has developed and produces over 70 lecture programs for public and private clients, including LIU Post Hutton House, Molloy College, The Huntington Cinema Arts Centre, and dozens of colleges, libraries, and venues throughout the country.

The Immigrant Experience in Film, presented by Greg Blank at GN Library

Come and see the exhibition of striking masterpieces of sculptures by Dr. Suzanne Posner from May 1 to July 31 at the Great Neck Library at 159 Bayview Avenue, Great Neck. The sculptures are located at the bookshelves in the Main Library's Reference Study Area. Be sure to join us for an art reception on June 6 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Main Library's Front Lobby. "Making art is joyful. An artist makes art out of the materials available. The nature of the materials influences or even elicits the creation. I enjoy seeing the materials from which the art originates; the stone, the paint, the paper, the wire. I am a direct carver, often starting a piece without knowing what the subject will be or changing the subject after starting. If a piece of stone breaks off unintentionally or a painting subject move, the artwork may need to change midway. I try to take the unexpected as an exciting challenge and continue the work with grace. I hope to bring joy to viewers with beautiful shapes and brilliant color." Dr. Suzanne Posner is an award-winning sculptor and painter. She has been sculpting in stone for 30 years and currently teaches stone sculpture at Cumberland School in Great Neck, NY. Posner’s work can be found in private art collections throughout the United States and has been seen in numerous group and solo shows. She is a member of The Art Students League of New York and The National Art League. Suzanne grew up creating clay creatures and unique jewelry and acting in school musicals. She has visited over 50 countries. She graduated from Bryn Mawr College with a B.A. in Philosophy and from the University of North Carolina with a D.D.S. While she practiced dentistry in NYC, she studied sculpture and painting at The Art Students League and The New School. She moved back to her hometown of Great Neck and started sculpting in stone as she raised 2 creative and responsible sons with her beloved husband, Alan Katz. In 2011, Suzanne was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, and she retired from dentistry to sculpt and paint and teach stone carving.

Presenter Stephen Nachamie will show you how art mirrors history.

Stephen Nachamie is an award-winning stage and film director who has worked on Broadway, Off-Broadway, Regionally and Internationally. Currently developing and directing new works on stage and film, his work ranges from intimate plays to large-scale musicals, concerts, and TV events. In honor of the America 250 milestone, Robert Viagas explores the authentic dances, songs, and theatrical productions of the era. This presentation offers unique cultural samples to provide a humanizing look at the creators of the United States.

Robert will explore how the hit Broadway musical Hamilton showed the Founding Fathers (and Mothers) rapping and dancing. But what did they actually do for entertainment? Yes, they danced, but what kinds of dances? Yes, they sang, but what kinds of songs? Yes, they attended the theatre and listened to concerts, but which shows? And where? What stimulated their imaginations as they were forming a new nation? 

Robert Viagas is an author and lecturer specializing in theatre, film—and ghosts. He spent 24 years as managing editor of Playbill, the theatre program company in New York. He's also the published author of 23 books, with two more on the way. He's turned his research into entertaining and informative lectures for libraries and colleges across Long Island.

An Argentine composer based in New York since 2000, Carlos combines folklore rhythms with jazz and classical concepts. Having studied with maestros Jorge Morel, Dave Smey at the Brooklyn Conservatory, and Pablo Ziegler (Astor Piazzolla's pianist), he has performed in France, Portugal, Ireland, Scandinavia, Japan, Greece, Belgium and recorded four albums featuring string quartet, chamber ensemble, and trio concertante. His works are published in the USA and Europe.
