Surviving October 7: A Great Neck Native's Fight Against Antisemitism

During World War II, President Roosevelt outlined four freedoms we treasure as Americans. Freedom of speech and freedom of worship were derived from the Bill of Rights, but then he added two new aspirations: freedom from want and freedom from fear.
Norman Rockwell illustrated these ideas in what is perhaps his most beloved series of paintings, The Four Freedoms. This presentation will examine these illustrations, placing them within the larger context of his politically inspired production over the decades, including his brilliant late work, which addressed the struggle for civil rights during the 1960s.Join us for an afternoon of art history as we continue to celebrate America 250.
Dennis Raverty is a speaker, author and art historian who for decades has delighted audiences with lively presentations at libraries, churches, synagogues, hostels and business lunches on a variety of topics in the history of art, from the Italian Renaissance to the Harlem Renaissance. His articles and criticism have appeared in Art Journal, Art in America, The International Review of African American Art, Art Criticism, The New Art Examiner, Prospects: An Annual of American Studies, Source: Notes in the History of Art, and Art Papers, where he was a contributing editor. He authored four entries for the most recent edition of the Grove Encyclopedia of American Art, published by Oxford University Press (2011).
This lecture will take place at the Great Neck Library (159 Bayview Avenue, Great Neck) on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. Registration is not required; seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. In this beautifully crafted and often hilarious debut novel, thirty-seven-year-old Layla Moody must navigate the coronavirus pandemic lockdown while finding family on her own terms.
It's January of 2020 and thirty-seven-year-old Layla Moody is trying to worm her way into a party at the Sundance Film Festival. When she’s not picking up other people’s abandoned drinks or skinny-dipping in the hot tub, she’s trying to gain access to someone who can jump-start her stymied career as a Hollywood television writer. After a run-in with one of her creative heroines, she lands an opportunity to get her show produced. The only catch is, she has to return to New York, which she’s been avoiding since her father’s death.
But soon all is thwarted when COVID-19 shuts down the entertainment industry and any opportunity to propel her life forward. While quarantining alone in her parents’ apartment in Queens, she wrestles with the ghost of an ex-boyfriend who disappeared unexpectedly, the grief of processing the loss of her father, and the notion that she just might be the one responsible for her current state of solitude.
Finally, in spite of warnings and stay-at-home orders, she throws caution to the wind and joins a share house on Fire Island where she spent summers in her twenties. By returning to the house and its eclectic denizens, she is reintroduced to the comfort and annoying tendencies of other people, and begins to grasp how to find family on her own terms.

A frantic mother tells cops her kids have vanished in broad daylight from outside a suburban Long Island market on Halloween. Inspired by one of the oldest unsolved missing child cases in U.S. history [the 1955 disappearance of Steven Damman] and other worldwide missing child cases like it, For Nothing Is Hidden is a cautionary tale spanning more than 50 years -- from the initial disappearance of little Bobby Goodson to its impact on the already tenuous marriage of his small-town, middle America-raised parents en route to the unlikeliest of resolutions decades later. You'll think you'll know it all from the start. Truth is, you won't.
John A. Valenti 3rd is a veteran national award-winning journalist for the Long Island, New York-based Newsday, and a critically acclaimed author [Swee'pea, The Story of Lloyd Daniels and Other Playground Legends; Atria Books, Simon & Schuster] and poet [13 Poets from Long Island; Bushwickborn Productions, Inc. / Pope Brothers Ink] who has appeared on hundreds of TV and radio shows, including NPR and Good Morning America. He also is featured in the Emmy Award-winning ESPN 30-for-30 episode Big Shot, which delves into his national award-winning reporting on John Spano and his fraudulent attempt to buy the NHL New York Islanders.
Valenti’s decades of insightful, in-depth reporting shine through as this novel explores the often-untold strains of a criminal investigation, peeling back layers on the marriage of Driscoll and Colleen Goodson as police and the media pore through the smallest details of their lives in an attempt to find their missing son. Valenti ties in real crimes of the day -- the so-called "Shooting of the Century" killing of millionaire William Woodward Jr. by his socialite wife Ann; the famed "Boy in the Box" mystery -- in a seamless weave of events that blur the line between fact and fiction in this literary, historic crime novel. For Nothing Is Hidden is John's debut novel.
