📰 News we're reading
• Dixie National Forest Plans 2026 (usda.gov) — Dixie National Forest officials in Cedar City plan prescribed burns from this fall through spring 2027, which could affect smoke and travel on nearby routes like Highways 14, 143, 148, and 89. Crews will work in areas including Duck Creek, Mammoth Creek, Panguitch Lake, and Yankee Meadows, with temporary closures and visible smoke possible. Residents are urged to watch for warning signs and check air quality and Forest Service updates before traveling.
• Wild horse herd in Cedar City faces massive reduction plan (abc4.com) — Wild horses near Cedar City are being rounded up as federal land managers work to cut an overgrown herd roughly in half due to drought-driven food and water shortages. About 300 animals will be removed from the Sulphur Herd Management Area, then evaluated, vaccinated, and offered for adoption or sale, aiming to protect both the range and remaining horses.
