🌱U Hospital Taps Navy For 500 Surgeries + CDC Guidelines For SLC

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Salt Lake City.

Get on up, Salt Lake City! It's Friday, so let's get you started with everything you need to know going on today in Salt Lake City.

First, today's weather:

Cloudy, a shower in the afternoon/evening. High: 60 Low: 42.

Here are the top three stories in Salt Lake City today:

  1. The coronavirus pandemic saw hospitals across the country backlog non-critical surgeries while medical staff and resources were re-allocated to care for those affected by the virus. Now, the U of U Hospital is turning to the U.S. Navy medical team to help them catch up on 500 surgeries that have been delayed due to COVID-19. The Navy will lend about 20 medical staffers as beds are opened and delayed operations are scheduled. "We're certainly not back to normal, but we're trying to shift and get headed in that direction," said U of U hospital CEO Dr. Michael Good. (Subscription: Salt Lake Tribune)
  2. Many families in the Salt Lake area and throughout the state lean on the Discovery Gateway Children's Museum at Gateway to provide an afternoon of fun and augmented hands-on learning. But access to the museum's facility, exhibits, and programs isn't available to everyone. Now, the museum's Medallion Program is working to make sure more kids have the opportunity to enjoy the museum by raising money to cover admission for families in need. The program partners with Headstart, the Ronald McDonald House, various refugee organizations, and others. (2 KUTV)
  3. Under CDC guidelines, Salt Lake County is considered to be under the "medium" level for COVID-19 transmission. What that means with regard to masks is that there are still some situations where wearing one is still be recommended based on underlying risks for serious illness either for themselves or others. To that end, Dr. Angela Dunn, Executive Director Salt Lake County health department, has some additional guidance that centers around respect and awareness outlined in the article. (Fox13Now.com)
