Today's riddle: What is clean when it is black and dirty when it is white? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Parents of cyclist who was killed in crosswalk file wrongful death lawsuit against driver (vtdigger.org) — Burlington parents of 16-year-old Shiloh Skalka have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against local folk artist Douglas Knapp, alleging negligent driving in the Pine and Locust streets crosswalk crash that killed her. The case follows criminal charges already filed, and the family has also created a memorial fund to support community programs reflecting Shiloh's love of art, kindness, and creativity.
2. Burlington begins process to seek Act 250 exemption (wcax.com) — Burlington officials are starting a bid for Tier One A status, which could exempt some city development from Act 250 review and speed up permitting. Because local rules already closely match state standards, planners say the change could save time and money for future Burlington projects, with a decision possible as early as next year.
3. State of Vermont, Superior Court, Probate Division, Chittenden Unit, Docket No. 26-PR-05306 (sevendaysvt.com) — Residents should know that creditors of the late South Burlington resident Robert P. Baccei have four months from October 7 to file written claims with the estate's executor and the Chittenden Probate Court in Burlington. If claims aren't submitted on time, they may be permanently barred, so anyone owed money should review their records and act promptly.
4. Act 250 Notice, Minor Application, 300022-810 V.S.A. §§ 6000 (sevendaysvt.com) — A new double-sided, illuminated monument sign is proposed for Commerce Square Plaza on Hinesburg Road in South Burlington, and the Act 250 application has been deemed complete. Unless someone requests a hearing by October 27, the state may issue the permit without one, so nearby residents and businesses should review the plans now if they have concerns.
5. Vermont Superior Court, Civil Division, Case No. 26-CV-05267 (sevendaysvt.com) — A Burlington-based Vermont Superior Court notice sets an October 29 hearing on whether a mobile home in Richmond's Riverview Commons Mobile Home Park should be declared abandoned and sold at public auction. Residents in Burlington and across Chittenden County who may be affected by similar proceedings are urged to note the court's contact information and accessibility options for attending hearings.
