📰 News we're reading
• Free to Flow: A Northfield Beer, a Global River Day, and Vermont's 1,000 Dams (compassvermont.com) — A Northfield brewery is selling a special four-pack that sends part of each sale to Friends of the Winooski River, supporting dam removals that affect the Dog River and nearby communities. The piece explains how Vermont’s many obsolete dams worsen flooding and harm trout habitat, and why local river groups see removal as key to resilience after recent high-water summers.

• Leslie J. Matthews, PhD and Richard 'Sandy' Hyde, PhD (vtdigger.org) — Northfield and nearby towns are mourning longtime local contributors Leslie Matthews and Richard “Sandy” Hyde, who died at home on May 7. Their lives spanned environmental science, Norwich University, the Northfield Conservation Commission, and wide-ranging volunteer work, from Habitat for Humanity to healthcare advocacy. A public celebration of their lives is planned in Calais this August.
