Today's riddle: Do you know what the two sides of a circle are? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Goats cleared invasive plants from a park slope in six days (alexandriabrief.com) — In Alexandria's West End, goats and sheep just cleared invasive plants from a steep slope at James Marx All Veterans Park in only six days, as part of a city pilot project. Crews are now removing woody stems and replanting natives while officials evaluate whether this low-impact, herbicide-free approach should be expanded to more local sites.
2. From $173,000 to $2.8 million: Homes sold in Alexandria last week (alexandriabrief.com) — If you're watching Alexandria's housing market, 26 homes sold locally between Sept. 17 and 23, with prices ranging from $173,000 condos to a $2.8 million Old Town North penthouse. The data show rising prices but softer demand, with many listings cutting prices while a few standout properties still drew quick, above-asking offers.
3. Alexandria Car Tax Deadline Is Oct. 5 — Late Penalty Can Jump to 25% (thezebra.org) — If you live or run a business in Alexandria, your 2026 personal property tax bill is due Monday, Oct. 5, to avoid steep penalties that can climb to 25 percent. You can pay online, by mail, in person at the West End Finance Office, or via a downtown drop box, and should also check that your mailed residential parking permit arrived.
4. Leaders face fallout from $3+ million spreadsheet error by Alexandria's DASH bus service (wjla.com) — Alexandria's DASH bus system overspent its budget by about $3.7 million after a spreadsheet error, forcing leaders to weigh service cuts or more taxpayer funding. City officials, including the mayor, are meeting to demand accountability, tighten financial controls, and decide how to protect the fare-free service many residents rely on for daily trips around town.
5. Out of the Attic: Julio Duran and the role of Impacto (alextimes.com) — Alexandria's Latino community once had a powerful local voice in Impacto, the Spanish-language newspaper Julio Duran published here for 15 years. As the city marks National Hispanic Heritage Month, officials highlight how his work broadened understanding of Latin America and invite residents to explore Alexandria's events celebrating Hispanic and Latin American histories and cultures.
