Alexandria Public Schools' First Day of School: Aug. 24 (alexandrialivingmagazine.com) — Alexandria City Public Schools families now have the full 2026–27 traditional calendar, with the first day of school set for Monday, August 24, 2026, and the last day on June 17, 2027. The schedule includes major holidays and breaks, while Samuel W. Tucker Elementary follows a modified calendar starting July 27 but ending the same day in June.

2. Alexandria man arrested for allegedly destroying multiple license plate readers (alxnow.com) — Multiple license plate reader cameras and solar panels were recently destroyed at intersections across Alexandria, and police have charged a 21-year-old city resident in connection with the vandalism. Investigators used surveillance video and Flock camera data to identify a damaged Subaru, recover a baseball bat, and make an arrest. The suspect faces misdemeanor and felony charges and a July 24 court date.

3. Court upholds Alexandria approval of Ladrey redevelopment (alexandriabrief.com) — A Virginia appeals court has upheld Alexandria’s approval of the Ladrey redevelopment, confirming the city followed zoning rules and due process. The ruling clears legal uncertainty as the project shifts to rehabilitating the 11-story Ladrey building at 300 Wythe St., preserving 159 deeply affordable apartments for seniors and disabled residents. Construction is slated to start in January 2027, with all current residents guaranteed a right to return.

4. Fairfax man charged with embezzling nearly $60,000 through Alexandria Soccer Association employment (alexandriabrief.com) — A Fairfax man is facing multiple embezzlement and computer fraud charges after police say he used his role with the Alexandria Soccer Association and a fake overseas camp to collect nearly $60,000 from 13 victims. Fairfax County detectives are continuing their investigation and are asking anyone with information to contact the Financial Crimes Unit or submit an anonymous tip.
