Annandale High School PTSA to Host Annual Golf Classic

Held in Lorton, the event is one of the school's biggest fundraisers.

’s biggest fundraiser is back. The 15th annual Red & White Golf Classic is on Friday, May 18 at 8 a.m. at in Lorton.

Hosted by the AHS Parent-Teacher Student Association, the main attraction for the event is an 18-hole game of golf. There will be a buffet lunch provided by Coyote Grill. Aside from the golf, there’s also a raffle, auction and several contests. Winners will take home donated prizes including stays at vacation homes and more.

The success of the fundraiser rests primarily on the participants. Residents can get involved in a number of ways: by donating, sponsoring the event, advertising in the tournament program, participating as a golfer, or volunteering. Donors are recognized as patrons of Annandale High School. The cost of sponsorship varies.

The individual player fee for golf is $125, but four people can play for a discounted price of $460. A portion of the fee is donated to the PTSA. Players do not have to have a certain skill level in order to sign up and golf; those interested in playing golf have until May 11 to register.

“All the money that we raise goes toward support of academic programs at the AHS so it really is an important event at the academic of the school,” said Rich Fruchterman, who is co-chair of this year’s event along with Sallie Williams.

Fruchterman said the event is largely run and attended by parents, but it’s common for alumni or senior students who completed their exams to show up for the day. Volunteers are also needed to help set up before, during and after the event. To volunteer, residents can e-mail Fruchterman and Williams at golfclassic@annandalehsptsa.org.

This will be the second time the event will be held at the Laurel Hill Golf Club, which is a Fairfax County Park Authority-owned and operated facility. Laurel Hill will also host the United States Golf Association 2013 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.

Golf Classic organizers began planning for this year's event immediately following last year’s event.

“It’s important to book the venue immediately after it’s over so we don’t lose the space,” said Fruchterman.

All proceeds from the golf classic go to benefit AHS teachers and students. Fruchterman said the funds go toward everything from course materials to paying for courses for teachers.
