The primaries are Tuesday, Aug. 23. Here’s your complete guide to who’s running to represent Annandale.
Where and When to Vote
Polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. People in line before 7 p.m. will be allowed to vote.

Due to statewide redistricting, some voters may be going to a different polling location than in past years.
Absentee Voting

Absentee voting started in July. The last day to vote absentee in person is Saturday, Aug. 20. Absentee ballots must be received by the elections office by 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23. Complete information on absentee voting is available on the Fairfax County government website.

WHO’S ON THE BALLOT TUESDAY
There are only two races on the ballot in Annandale on Tuesday, Aug. 23. They are in the 37th state senate district and in the Fairfax County Sheriff’s race.
State Senate – District 37
The winner of Tuesday’s primary will face Democrat in November.

Fairfax County Sheriff
Two Republicans, “Wes” Kammerer and William Cooper, are facing off in the Aug. 23 primary. The winner will face current Sheriff Stan Barry in November.

Board of Supervisors – Braddock District
Two democrats, Janet Olescek and Christopher Wade, are facing off in a primary in the Braddock District. The winner of Tuesday's primary will challenge Republican incumbent John Cook for the Braddock District seat on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. Green Party candidate Carey Campbell is also running.

Note: The following races will not appear on the Aug. 23 ballot since none are primary challenges, but these candidates will appear on the ballot in November.

Incumbent Chap Petersen, a Democrat, is facing a challenge from Gerarda Culipher. Petersen has served since 2008.

Dick Saslaw, the Democrat incumbent, is facing challenges from Robert C. Sarvis (Republican) and Katherine Pettigrew (Green Party).

Green Party candidate James L. Leslie is challenging incumbent Kaye Kory (a Democrat) in this year’s election. Kory has served since 2010. Leslie also ran in 2009.

Incumbent Democrat Vivian Watts is facing Green Party candidate Dimitris Kolazas. Watts has served as a delegate since 1998.

Incumbent Jim Scott, a Democrat, is unopposed and has served in the Virginia House of Delegates since 1992.

Providence District
Incumbent Linda Smyth, a Democrat, has served on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors since 2004. Republican Chris Grisafe is her challenger. Miriam Erickson, also a Republican, withdrew from the race earlier this year.

Incumbent Penny Gross has served on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors since 1996. She is a Democrat. Republican David Feld is challenging her for the Mason District seat.
