Atoms Boys Lacrosse Dominates Jefferson in Opening Round of Northern Region Tournament

The Atoms dominated the game in a 18-4 blowout over the Colonials

In a game that was reminiscent of their 17-3 blowout victory over Woodson for the Patriot District title, the Annandale Atoms dominated the visiting Thomas Jefferson Colonials all over the field in an 18-4 victory Tuesday night in the opening round of the Northern Region tournament.

Eight Annandale players scored goals in the game, with junior Alec Villafana leading the way with four goals. The Colonials did not score their first goal until late in the second quarter, as the Atoms dominated possession of the ball throughout the game.

“As long as we’re winning faceoffs and getting ground balls and keeping the ball in our possession, that helps,” said Annandale head coach William Maglisceau after the game. “We knew they had some great shooters, number twelve is the real deal, and we wanted to limit their touches.”

Annandale jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, junior Ryan Miller scored in the first minute of the game, quickly followed by senior Stephen Craig.

Craig finished the game with three goals, including a tough score in traffic right in front of the net which he followed up with another score on the Atoms’ next possession.

The game was already out of reach by halftime with Annandale sitting comfortably with a 12-1 lead.

“Our goalie played well in the clear game, which helped getting the ball down in our offense,” said Maglisceau. “No one was really selfish tonight. They were sharing the ball making good things happen and letting their brothers take the shots instead of themselves which is always a good thing.”

The Millers, Lalandes, and Craigs all had strong efforts collectively for the Atoms.

The victory places Annandale in a second round matchup with the Robinson Rams at home on Thursday starting at 7 p.m.
